What to Expect

Expect a physically demanding but highly rewarding ridge walk. You'll navigate dense pine forests, camp in pristine clearings like Sikolta, and spend an entire day exposed to high winds on the ridge. The descent drops you into the massive Pushtara bugyals (meadows) which look like Windows XP wallpapers on steroids. Expect basic dry-pit toilets, zero mobile network, and pure wilderness.

Honest Heads-Up
  • The ridge day has zero water sources. You must carry 2 to 3 liters from the campsite.
  • Wind chill on the ridge is brutal. It can drop the perceived temperature to sub-zero even on a sunny day.
  • Sankri basecamp gets incredibly chaotic and noisy during peak seasons (May and December).
  • This is not a casual weekend hike. The ascent to the ridge is steep and tests your calves and lungs.
  • Do not bring trolley bags. You will be laughed at. Bring a proper rucksack.

How to Reach

Fly into Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) or take an overnight train to Dehradun Railway Station from Delhi. From Dehradun, it's an 8-10 hour scenic (and bumpy) drive to Sankri basecamp via Mussoorie, Purola, and Mori. Most group trek packages include this transport from Dehradun.

Travel Tips
1Trim your toenails before the trek. The descent from the ridge to Pushtara will murder your toes if your nails are long.
2Layering is the secret to survival. Don't wear one massive jacket; wear a base layer, fleece, and a windproof shell so you can adjust as you sweat.
3Keep your phone and power bank inside your sleeping bag at night. The cold drains lithium-ion batteries rapidly.
4Sunscreen isn't optional. At 12,000 ft, UV rays will burn your skin even if it feels freezing cold.
5Hydrate before you start walking. Chugging water while panting on a steep incline is difficult.

Eat all your meals, even if you lose your appetite at altitude. Your body burns thousands of calories staying warm and walking. Carbs are your best friend here.

FAQs

Is Phulara Ridge better than Kedarkantha?
They are completely different. Kedarkantha is a summit climb where you reach a peak and come down. Phulara is a ridge walk where you stay at altitude for hours. If you hate crowds and want continuous views, Phulara is vastly superior.
Can a fit beginner do this trek?
Yes, provided you are actually fit. You need to be able to jog 5km in under 35 minutes. The ridge day is long and testing, but there are no technical climbing sections.
Will I get mobile network on the trek?
No. Your phone becomes a camera after Purola/Sankri. BSNL and Jio work patchily in Sankri, but once you start trekking, expect zero connectivity.
Are there washrooms on the trail?
Trek operators set up dry-pit toilet tents at the campsites. You do your business in a dug hole and cover it with mud. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Can I offload my backpack to a mule?
Yes, most operators allow you to offload your main backpack for ₹1500-₹2000 for the entire trek. However, you still need to carry a small daypack with water, snacks, and a jacket.
Is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a risk here?
The highest altitude is around 12,100 ft. While the risk is lower than high-altitude passes, AMS is still possible. Drink 3-4 liters of water daily and don't skip acclimatization.
What kind of shoes do I need?
High-ankle trekking shoes with good grip are non-negotiable. Do not bring sports shoes, running shoes, or sneakers. You will slip on the descent to Pushtara.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Absolutely. Joining a group tour starting from Dehradun is incredibly safe. The trekking community in Uttarakhand is respectful, and trek leaders ensure group safety.
