What to Expect

Expect long days of walking (5-7 hours daily), sleeping in sleeping bags inside tents or basic wooden homestays in Osla/Gangaad, zero cellular network, and spectacular views of the Supin river. You'll be disconnected from the world, eating hot dal chawal in a dining tent while staring at snow-capped peaks. The trail is well-marked but rocky, and you'll share it with mules carrying supplies.

Honest Heads-Up
  • The 10-hour drive from Dehradun to Sankri is exhausting and prone to motion sickness. Take your meds.
  • Mules have the right of way. Always stand on the mountain side (hillside) when they pass, never on the valley cliff edge.
  • Despite being an 'easy-moderate' trek, it is 47km long. If you haven't prepped your legs, your knees will hate you on the descent.
  • July and August bring heavy monsoon rains, leeches, and a high risk of landslides on the mountain roads.
  • Osla village can feel a bit commercialized during peak May-June season with multiple trekking groups camping nearby.

How to Reach

Fly or take a train to Dehradun. From Dehradun ISBT or Railway Station, take a shared cab or bus to Sankri (10-11 hours, approx 200 km). Sankri is the base camp. From Sankri, a 1-hour bumpy jeep ride takes you to Taluka, where the actual trek begins.

Travel Tips
1Trim your toenails before the trek. Long toenails will hit the front of your boots on the 23km descent and turn black.
2Layering is key. The temperature fluctuates wildly between the sunny trail and the freezing campsite at night.
3Carry a power bank of at least 10,000mAh. There is no electricity to charge phones past Sankri.
4Don't rush. The trail is long, not steep. Walk at a rhythmic, conversational pace to avoid fatigue.

FAQs

Is Har Ki Dun safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, but it's highly recommended to join a group tour or hire a registered local guide from Sankri. The trail is remote, and having a group ensures safety in case of medical emergencies.
Will I get network connectivity on the trek?
No. Your phone becomes a camera after Purola/Sankri. BSNL sometimes works in Sankri, but on the trek, you will have zero network. Inform your family beforehand.
Are there proper toilets on the trail?
Group tours provide dry pit toilet tents at campsites. Homestays in Osla have basic Indian-style toilets. Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Do I need to take Diamox for altitude sickness?
Har Ki Dun goes up to 11,700 ft. While AMS is less common here compared to higher treks, it can happen. Consult your doctor about Diamox, but hydration and a slow ascent are your best defenses.
Can a complete beginner do this trek?
Yes, if you are physically fit. You should be able to jog 5km in under 35 minutes. The challenge isn't the altitude, but the long daily distances (10-14 km per day).
Do I absolutely need trekking shoes?
Yes. Do not attempt this in sports shoes or sneakers. You need trekking shoes with good ankle support and grip for the rocky, sometimes muddy terrain.
Are there ATMs in Sankri?
No. The last reliable ATMs are in Purola or Dehradun. Carry enough cash for offloading bags, buying snacks at local dhabas, or tipping your guides.
Can I drink water directly from the streams?
While the stream water is mostly clean, it's safer for city-dwellers to use water purification tablets or a Lifestraw to avoid stomach bugs. Your trek cooks will provide boiled water at camps.
