What to Expect
Expect long days of walking (5-7 hours daily), sleeping in sleeping bags inside tents or basic wooden homestays in Osla/Gangaad, zero cellular network, and spectacular views of the Supin river. You'll be disconnected from the world, eating hot dal chawal in a dining tent while staring at snow-capped peaks. The trail is well-marked but rocky, and you'll share it with mules carrying supplies.
- The 10-hour drive from Dehradun to Sankri is exhausting and prone to motion sickness. Take your meds.
- Mules have the right of way. Always stand on the mountain side (hillside) when they pass, never on the valley cliff edge.
- Despite being an 'easy-moderate' trek, it is 47km long. If you haven't prepped your legs, your knees will hate you on the descent.
- July and August bring heavy monsoon rains, leeches, and a high risk of landslides on the mountain roads.
- Osla village can feel a bit commercialized during peak May-June season with multiple trekking groups camping nearby.
Things to Do
Plan Your Trip
Fly or take a train to Dehradun. From Dehradun ISBT or Railway Station, take a shared cab or bus to Sankri (10-11 hours, approx 200 km). Sankri is the base camp. From Sankri, a 1-hour bumpy jeep ride takes you to Taluka, where the actual trek begins.
Local Guide
Must try: Rajma Chawal (locally grown red kidney beans), Red Rice, Linguda (fiddlehead fern vegetable, seasonal), Mandua (Ragi) Roti
You will burn a lot of calories. Eat the high-carb meals (dal, rice, roti, potatoes) provided at camp. Carry your own dry fruits, energy bars, and electoral powder for the trail.
