What to Expect

Expect heavy crowds in May and June, a steep and continuous 6km uphill climb from Janki Chatti, basic to non-existent infrastructure on the trail, and chaotic pony traffic. The air gets thin, the weather turns cold quickly, but the spiritual energy and dramatic mountain scenery make the grind worth it.

How to Reach

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun (approx. 200km). The nearest major railway stations are Dehradun and Haridwar. From there, you must hire a taxi or take a bus to Barkot, then proceed to Janki Chatti. From Janki Chatti, Yamunotri is accessible only by a 6km trek on foot, pony, or palanquin.

Travel Tips
1Start your trek from Janki Chatti as early as 5:00 AM to avoid the midday sun and the massive traffic jams of ponies.
2Walk on the hillside of the path, not the cliff side. Ponies carry heavy loads and can easily knock you off balance.
3Carry small denomination cash. UPI is notoriously unreliable due to poor network.
4Take Diamox if you are prone to altitude sickness, but consult your doctor first.
5Don't rush the descent. Coming down the steep 6km path is brutal on the knees; use a trekking pole.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Eat a very light meal before starting the 6km trek. Heavy parathas will make the steep climb miserable. Stick to easily digestible carbs like poha, upma, or a simple toast.

FAQs

How difficult is the Yamunotri trek?
It is a 6km steep, continuous uphill climb from Janki Chatti. For a fit 25-year-old, it's a moderate, sweaty workout taking 2.5 to 3 hours. For the elderly or unfit, it is extremely challenging.
Are ponies or palanquins available?
Yes. You can hire ponies (khacchars) or palanquins (dandis) from the Janki Chatti base camp. Prices are government-regulated but expect to pay between ₹1500 to ₹3000 depending on demand and weight.
Is there mobile network at Yamunotri?
Jio and BSNL work decently in patches, especially at Janki Chatti and near the temple. Airtel and Vodafone are virtually dead once you cross Barkot.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Absolutely. During May and June, everything from luxury tents in Barkot to basic dorms in Janki Chatti gets sold out months in advance. Do not show up without a booking.
Is mandatory registration required for Yamunotri?
Yes. The Uttarakhand government mandates a Chardham Yatra E-pass for all visitors. You can register online on the state's official portal or via their app.
Is it safe to visit during the monsoon?
No. July and August bring heavy rains, triggering massive landslides on the mountain roads. It's dangerous and you risk getting stranded for days.
Where do we take the holy dip?
Bathing happens in the Tapt Kund, a warm thermal spring. The nearby Surya Kund is boiling hot (around 88°C)—this is where rice and potatoes are submerged in cloth bags to cook as prasad. Do not step in Surya Kund!
Can I do Yamunotri and Gangotri in one trip?
Yes, this is called the Do-Dham Yatra. It typically takes 4 to 5 days starting from Haridwar or Dehradun, using Uttarkashi as a transit hub.
