What to Expect

Expect to be pushed out of your comfort zone. You'll start in dense forests, move into alpine meadows, and finally hit unforgiving moraines and glaciers. The ascent to the pass is exhausting, but the descent is notoriously steep and slippery—often requiring ropes or micro-spikes. You will sleep in freezing temperatures, use dry pit toilets, and eat basic survival food. The reward? Unmatched, face-to-face views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag peaks, plus the deep satisfaction of completing one of India's toughest commercial treks.

Honest Heads-Up
  • This is NOT for beginners. Do not attempt this if you haven't done at least one Himalayan trek above 14,000 feet.
  • The descent from Bali Pass is a near-vertical drop over snow and loose scree. Your knees will scream.
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a very real threat here. Never hide a headache from your trek leader.
  • Zero mobile network after Sankri or Janki Chatti. You will be off the grid for 7-8 days.
  • Temperatures routinely drop to -10°C at advance base camps, even in the summer.

How to Reach

Fly into Jolly Grant Airport or take a train to Dehradun. From Dehradun, it's an 8-10 hour drive (approx. 200 km) via mountain roads to the base camps at Sankri or Janki Chatti. Most group trek packages include transport from Dehradun railway station.

Travel Tips
1Cut your toenails before the trek. The steep descent will cause bruised toes if your nails are long.
2Layering is key. Do not bring one massive jacket; bring multiple layers you can add or remove as you sweat.
3Keep your phone and power bank batteries warm by keeping them inside your sleeping bag at night.
4Diamox is a diuretic. You will pee a lot. Don't let this stop you from drinking 4 liters of water a day.
5Listen to your trek leader. If they say the weather is turning and you need to turn back, you turn back.

Eat even if you lose your appetite (a common symptom of altitude). You are burning 4,000+ calories a day. Drink at least 4-5 liters of water daily to acclimatize.

FAQs

Can a beginner do the Bali Pass trek?
Absolutely not. This is a level 5 difficult trek. You need prior experience with high-altitude treks (above 14,000 ft) and excellent cardiovascular fitness.
Is Diamox necessary for Bali Pass?
It is highly recommended as a preventive measure against AMS, given the rapid altitude gain. Always consult your doctor before starting a Diamox course.
What kind of shoes do I need?
High-ankle, waterproof trekking boots with deep lugs are mandatory. Do not show up in running shoes or basic sneakers; you will be sent back.
Can I offload my backpack?
Yes, most group tours allow you to offload your main backpack to mules or porters for an extra ₹2,500-₹3,500. You will still need to carry a daypack with water, snacks, and rain gear.
Are there washrooms on the trail?
No modern washrooms. Trekking groups set up dry pit toilet tents at campsites. Bring your own toilet paper and wet wipes.
Is there any mobile network?
You will lose network completely after Sankri or Janki Chatti. Inform your family that you will be unreachable for 7-8 days.
Is the descent really that dangerous?
It is extremely steep (almost 80 degrees in some sections) and full of loose scree and snow. Trek leaders will fix ropes if necessary, but you must be careful and follow instructions.
Can I do this trek solo?
Solo trekking is heavily discouraged and practically impossible without local permits, guides, and technical gear. Go with a certified group tour aggregator.
