What to Expect

Dusty off-roading, homestays with basic dry toilets, starry skies that make you question your existence, and a deep dive into Tibetan Buddhism. No luxury, pure adventure.

Honest Heads-Up
  • AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a real threat. Don't rush the ascent.
  • Roads? What roads? Expect to be tossed around in your tempo traveler for hours.
  • BSNL is the most reliable network. Jio works in Kaza now, but do not rely on it.
  • Dry compost toilets are common in village homestays. Get used to them.
  • Temperatures drop drastically at night, even in the peak of summer.

How to Reach

Take an overnight Volvo from Delhi or Chandigarh to Shimla. From Shimla, hire a 4x4 or join a group tempo traveler to take the Hindustan-Tibet highway via Kinnaur. The Manali route via Rohtang and Kunzum Pass is shorter but triggers altitude sickness rapidly.

Travel Tips
1Acclimatize properly in Kalpa or Nako before hitting Kaza. Do not rush the ascent.
2Carry physical maps or download offline Google Maps; your phone will lose signal after Kinnaur.
3Keep at least one buffer day. Landslides at Malling Nallah or Kunzum Pass can delay you unexpectedly.
4Respect the dry toilets. Throwing wet wipes or plastic in them ruins the composting process.
5Keep your power banks and camera batteries close to your body; the extreme cold drains batteries fast.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Must try: Thukpa, Momos, Tingmo (steamed bread), Butter Tea (Cha-cha), Sea Buckthorn juice

Don't expect fast food service. Meals are cooked fresh from scratch in homestays. Order your dinner by 7 PM so the hosts can prepare.

FAQs

Should I start from Shimla or Manali?
Always start from Shimla. The gradual ascent through Kinnaur allows your body to acclimatize to the altitude. The Manali route climbs too fast and almost guarantees Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Is Spiti safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, locals are incredibly respectful and crime is almost non-existent. However, due to treacherous roads and lack of network, joining a group tour offers much better logistics and safety.
Do Indians need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Spiti?
No, Indian citizens do not need an ILP for the Spiti Valley itself. A valid Govt ID is enough. However, foreigners do need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
Will my Jio or Airtel SIM work?
Airtel is dead past Kinnaur. Jio works decently in Kaza town now, but BSNL (postpaid or prepaid) remains the most reliable network in the deeper villages.
Can I drive my hatchback to Spiti?
You can, but you'll likely rip your underbelly on the water crossings (pagal nallahs). High ground clearance SUVs or taking a group tempo traveler is highly recommended.
How bad are the toilets?
Hotels in Kaza have standard western toilets, but authentic homestays in Kibber or Langza use eco-friendly dry compost toilets. Bring your own toilet paper and keep an open mind.
Are there ATMs in Spiti?
There is an SBI ATM in Kaza, but it is frequently out of cash or out of order. Carry all the hard cash you need from Shimla or Manali.
What's the difference between Ladakh and Spiti?
Spiti is more rugged, less commercialized, and focuses more on road-trip endurance and raw Buddhist culture. Ladakh has more tourist infrastructure and famous lakes.
