FAQs

Is it safe to visit Kibber in winter?
Yes, but only if you are prepared for -30°C temperatures and go with experienced local guides. It is not for casual tourists.
How do I prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?
Acclimatize in Kaza (3,800m) for at least 48 hours before heading to Kibber (4,270m). Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and consult a doctor about Diamox.
Can I spot a snow leopard on my own?
Almost impossible. They are perfectly camouflaged. You absolutely need to hire a local expert tracker who knows their territory and movement patterns.
Are there ATMs or card machines in Kibber?
No. The last reliable ATM is in Kaza, and even that runs out of cash. Carry enough physical cash from Shimla or Manali.
What is the washroom situation like?
Most homestays use traditional Spitian dry compost toilets. You do your business in a hole and throw dry dirt/husk over it. No water, no flush. It's hygienic and doesn't freeze in winter.
Is there any mobile network?
Very limited. BSNL works occasionally. Jio has recently started working in patches around Kaza and some high points, but expect to be off the grid.
Can I take my hatchback or sedan to Kibber?
While people have done it in summer, it is highly discouraged. The roads are brutal. A high ground clearance SUV or a 4x4 is strongly recommended.
Do I need to carry oxygen cylinders?
It's a good safety measure to carry a portable oxygen can for emergencies, especially in winter. Most professional expedition groups will carry medical oxygen.
