What to Expect

Expect a steep, continuous stone-paved ascent from Ghangaria. The trail is crowded with pilgrims chanting, mules carrying supplies, and palanquins. The weather can flip from harsh sun to freezing rain in 20 minutes. There are no overnight stays allowed at the top, so you must start early and descend by 2 PM.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a very real threat here. Do not try to outpace the altitude.
  • The trail is heavily trafficked by mules, meaning you will be dodging mule dung and strong smells the entire way.
  • During monsoon (July-August), the route from Joshimath to Govindghat is highly prone to massive landslides that can strand you for days.
  • There is zero mobile network past Govindghat, except for sporadic BSNL/Jio signals at Ghangaria.
  • This is a strict religious zone. Loud Bluetooth speakers, smoking, and drinking will get you in serious trouble.

How to Reach

Fly into Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) or take a train to Rishikesh/Haridwar. From there, take a shared cab or bus for a 10-12 hour drive to Govindghat. From Govindghat, take a local jeep to Pulna (4km), which is the starting point of the trek to Ghangaria.

Travel Tips
1Start your final ascent from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib by 5:30 AM to beat the mule traffic and unpredictable afternoon weather.
2Carry cash. UPI rarely works once you cross Govindghat due to poor network connectivity.
3Pace yourself. The biggest mistake young trekkers make is rushing the first 2km and burning out before the steepest sections.
4Keep a buffer day in your itinerary. Landslides on the Badrinath highway can easily delay your return journey by 24 hours.
5Use trekking poles. The descent back to Ghangaria is brutal on the knees, and poles will save you from days of pain.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Must try: Langar Khichdi (served hot at the Gurudwara), Gurudwara Tea (lifesaving at 15,200 ft), Aloo Paratha at Ghangaria dhabas, Pahari Maggi along the trail

Do not skip the langar at Hemkund Sahib. It is hot, free, and exactly what your body needs to recover from the altitude. At Ghangaria, food gets progressively more expensive due to transport costs, so budget accordingly.

FAQs

Can a beginner do the Hemkund Sahib trek?
Yes, but only with serious preparation. It is not a beginner-friendly walk. You need at least 2 months of cardio and leg-strengthening prep. The 6km climb from Ghangaria is brutal.
Can we stay overnight at Hemkund Sahib?
No. The altitude is too high and temperatures drop drastically. The Gurudwara mandates that everyone starts their descent back to Ghangaria by 2 PM.
Is there a mobile network on the trek?
Network is dead for most operators after Govindghat. BSNL and Jio work sporadically at Ghangaria, but do not rely on them. Inform your family before you start the trek.
Do I need to carry an oxygen cylinder?
Usually, no. However, AMS is common. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, and carry camphor/garlic to sniff. There is a basic medical dispensary at the Gurudwara if you feel breathless.
Can I do Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers on the same day?
Absolutely impossible. Both require a full day starting from the base camp at Ghangaria. You need a minimum of two days in Ghangaria to do both.
Are mules or helicopters available?
Helicopters run from Govindghat to Ghangaria (weather permitting). Mules and palanquins are available from Govindghat to Ghangaria, and from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib.
How are the toilets on the trail?
There are basic pay-and-use toilets along the trail and at Ghangaria. They get dirty quickly due to the high volume of people. Carry your own toilet paper, wet wipes, and sanitizer.
Is it safe during the monsoon?
The trek itself is safe but slippery. The real danger is the drive from Rishikesh to Govindghat, which is notorious for massive landslides in July and August. Keep buffer days.
