What to Expect

Expect a straightforward 45 to 60-minute climb mostly on stone steps. The trail starts from Peth Shahpur village and winds up to a huge plateau. Once at the top, you can easily spend an hour or two walking the 2-kilometer perimeter wall. On monsoon weekends, expect a massive crowd, thick fog, and strong winds. During winter, expect clear, panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Monsoon weekends are notoriously overcrowded. You might literally be standing in a queue on the stairs.
  • Monkeys at the top are aggressive. If you carry food in plastic bags, they will snatch it.
  • There is absolutely no shade on the plateau. Summer afternoon visits are brutal.
  • The base village gets muddy and parking becomes a nightmare on peak rainy weekends.

How to Reach

Take a train or drive to Lonavala. From Lonavala, Korigad (Peth Shahpur village) is about 20 km away via the INS Shivaji road. You can drive your own car, or hire a private jeep/cab from Lonavala station. The drive takes about 45 minutes.

Travel Tips
1Start early. Aim to start your trek by 7 AM to beat both the heat and the crowds.
2Wear actual trekking shoes. Running shoes will slip on the mossy stone steps during the monsoon.
3Keep your phone inside a dry bag during the monsoon—the rain here comes down horizontally due to wind.
4Don't rely on mobile networks. Download offline maps before leaving Lonavala, as signal is patchy at the base village.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Eat a heavy breakfast in Lonavala (like at Ramakrishna) before heading to the base village. The shacks at Peth Shahpur are great for post-trek Maggi and tea, but get chaotic during weekend lunch hours.

FAQs

Is Korigad safe for beginners and kids?
Yes, absolutely. It is one of the safest forts in Maharashtra. The trail is mostly well-laid stone steps, making it ideal for first-timers and kids with basic stamina.
How long does the Korigad trek take?
It takes about 45 to 60 minutes to reach the top from the base village of Peth Shahpur at a leisurely pace.
Are there food stalls at the top of the fort?
No, there are no commercial food stalls at the summit. You will find plenty of small shacks selling Maggi, Vada Pav, and tea at the base village.
Can we camp overnight at Korigad?
Yes, you can pitch tents near the Korai Devi temple on the plateau. However, you must carry your own tents, sleeping bags, and food. Be mindful of the wind.
Are washrooms available?
There are no washrooms on the fort itself. Basic, paid washroom facilities are available at the local eateries in the base village.
How do I reach Korigad from Lonavala without a personal vehicle?
You can hire a private jeep or auto-rickshaw from Lonavala station. State transport (ST) buses also run towards Aamby Valley, but their frequency is highly unreliable. Booking a group tour that includes transport is the easiest fix.
Is the lake water on top safe for drinking?
No. The water in the two lakes on the plateau is stagnant and not safe for drinking. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person.
What is the monkey situation like?
There are aggressive macaques on the trail and at the top. Keep all food strictly inside your backpack. Do not carry anything in plastic bags in your hands.
