How to Reach

Take a local Central Railway train from Mumbai to Kasara, or an express train to Igatpuri. From Kasara/Igatpuri, hire a shared or private local jeep (tum-tum/Trax) to the base villages of Ambewadi, Ghatghar, or Samrad. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Can a beginner do the AMK trek?

Absolutely not. AMK requires high stamina, upper body strength for rock climbing, and comfort with heights. Start with easier treks like Kalsubai or Rajmachi before even thinking about AMK.

Do I need technical gear for AMK?

Yes. Ropes, harnesses, helmets, and carabiners are mandatory for the rock climbing patch on Madan and the rappelling sections. Your guide or trek operator will provide these.

Where do we sleep during the trek?

You sleep in ancient rock-cut caves found on the forts (mostly Alang and Madan). They are spacious enough for small groups, but you need to carry your own sleeping bag and mat.

Is there drinking water available on the forts?

Yes, there are rock-cut water cisterns on the forts with potable water. However, you must carry at least 3 liters of your own water for the climb, and it's wise to carry water purification tablets for the cistern water.

How many days does the AMK trek take?

A standard AMK traverse takes 2 nights and 3 days. Fast, extremely fit trekkers sometimes do it in 2 days, but 3 days is recommended to actually enjoy the views and manage fatigue.

Are there washrooms on the trek?

No. You will be answering nature's call in the wild. Carry a trowel to bury your waste, and bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Do not litter.

Is it safe for solo female travelers?

You cannot do this trek solo, period. Whether male or female, you must go with a certified group or guide. Within a reputed group, it is safe, but be prepared for a lack of privacy.

What happens if I get injured?

Evacuation is a nightmare. There are no roads, and carrying a stretcher down technical rock patches is incredibly risky. Basic first aid is all you have until you reach the base village.
