What to Expect

Expect zero luxury and 100% adventure. Mangdewadi wakes up to the sound of trekkers. You'll find basic tapris selling Vada Pav and cutting chai, but the real action happens on the trail. Prepare for loose scree, strong ridge winds, and a spectacular sunrise over Sinhagad Fort. It is a physical challenge meant to test your stamina, not a leisure staycation.

Honest Heads-Up
  • The K2S trail has loose volcanic scree—shoes with excellent grip are non-negotiable.
  • There are absolutely zero washroom facilities once you start the climb.
  • Night treks mean dealing with strong winds and dropping temperatures on the exposed ridges.
  • Monsoon turns the trail into a slippery, leech-infested mudslide. Proceed with extreme caution.
  • Stray dogs might follow your group; they are usually harmless but keep your distance if you are carrying open food.

How to Reach

Take a PMPML city bus or a cab from Swargate, Pune, towards Katraj Old Tunnel / Mangdewadi base. It's roughly 15-20 km from central Pune. If trekking, take a one-way cab drop so you don't have to retrieve your vehicle after ending at Sinhagad.

Travel Tips
1Pack light, but do not compromise on water. 3 liters is the absolute minimum.
2A headlamp is 100x better than a phone flashlight—you need your hands free for scrambling.
3Pace yourself on the first 3 hills. Many burn out early, forgetting they have 10 more to go.
4Keep your backpack weight distributed evenly to help your balance on the loose scree.
5Trim your toenails before the trek; the steep descents will otherwise cause severe toe pain.

Must try: Misal Pav, Kanda Poha, Vada Pav, Cutting Chai, Zunka Bhakar (at Sinhagad base)

Eat a light, carb-heavy meal in Pune before arriving. Grab a quick chai and biscuit at the village tapri before starting the climb, and save your appetite for the legendary Kanda Bhaji and Pithla Bhakri at Sinhagad Fort after the trek.

FAQs

How long is the K2S trek from Mangdewadi?
The trek covers approximately 16 kilometers across 13 hills and usually takes 7 to 9 hours depending on your group's pace.
Is the K2S trek safe for beginners?
No. It is an endurance trek. While technically not difficult to climb, the sheer distance and continuous ascents/descents require high stamina.
Are there wild animals on the trail?
You might encounter stray dogs and very rarely snakes or wild boars. Sticking to your group and making normal conversational noise keeps wildlife away.
Where do we park our vehicles?
You can park near the Katraj old tunnel or village base, but since this is a point-to-point trek ending at Sinhagad, it's smarter to take a cab or rickshaw drop so you don't have to travel back for your car.
Can we do the trek in the monsoon?
Yes, but it is highly recommended to do it during the day. Night treks in the monsoon are risky due to zero visibility, high winds, and slippery mud.
Are there food stalls on the way?
There are no food stalls or water sources anywhere on the 16km ridge. You will only find food once you descend to the Sinhagad Fort base.
What about washrooms?
There are zero washroom facilities on the trail. Use the facilities in Pune before heading to the base.
Can I wear running shoes?
Bad idea. The trail is infamous for loose scree (gravel). You need proper trekking shoes with ankle support to avoid slipping and twisting your ankle.
