What to Expect

Expect absolute simplicity. Accommodation is almost entirely in village homestays—think sleeping on floor mats in a shared hall with basic, clean shared washrooms. Network connectivity is patchy at best. The turtle sightings happen in two batches (early morning and late evening) and are strictly managed by the conservation committee. You will be standing behind barricades; you cannot touch the turtles or use flash photography.

How to Reach

From Mumbai (approx 220 km): Drive via the Mumbai-Goa highway (NH66) to Goregaon, take a right towards Purar, then to Bankot and Velas. Alternatively, drive to Harihareshwar, take the Bagmandla-Vesavi ferry, and drive 15 mins to Velas. From Pune (approx 200 km): Drive via Tamhini Ghat to Mangaon, then towards Shrivardhan/Harihareshwar and take the ferry.

Travel Tips
1Carry enough cash; the nearest reliable ATM is miles away.
2Download offline maps on Google Maps before you leave the highway.
3Wake up at 5:00 AM for the morning sighting; the walk to the beach takes 15-20 minutes.
4Pack a power bank as power cuts are frequent in the summer.
5Listen to the Kasav Mitra Mandal volunteers on the beach—they are doing incredible conservation work.

Meals are usually served buffet-style in the homestay courtyard. Eat on time, don't waste food, and always ask for a glass of fresh Solkadhi to beat the afternoon heat.

FAQs

Is it guaranteed that I will see turtle hatchlings?
No. Turtles hatch naturally based on sand temperature. The conservationists check the nests twice a day (morning and evening). You might see ten, you might see none. It requires patience and a bit of luck.
Can I touch the baby turtles or help them to the sea?
Absolutely not. Touching them is illegal and harms their natural orientation process. You must watch from behind a barricade.
What is the accommodation like?
Very basic. The village operates on a community homestay model. You will likely sleep on a floor mattress in a local's living room or a shared dorm-style room. Bathrooms are basic and usually shared.
Is there mobile network in Velas?
Jio and BSNL work sporadically in certain spots, but generally, expect to be cut off from the grid. Most homestays do not have Wi-Fi.
Can we drink alcohol on the beach?
No. Velas is an eco-village with a conservative local population. Drinking on the beach or creating a nuisance is strictly prohibited and will get you kicked out by the village committee.
How do we cross the creek to reach Velas?
If you're coming from the Harihareshwar side, you need to take your vehicle onto a Ro-Ro ferry from Bagmandla to Vesavi. It's a fun 10-minute ride that saves hours of driving.
Is the food suitable for vegetarians?
Yes! In fact, during the festival, many homestays serve only vegetarian Konkani food (like Poha, Ghavane, Modak, and veg thalis) to maintain simplicity for large groups.
Can we swim at Velas beach?
Swimming is highly discouraged. The beach has a sudden drop-off and strong undercurrents. Plus, part of the beach is cordoned off for the turtle hatcheries.
