What to Expect

Expect endless bumpy rides, dry compost toilets in remote villages, frequent power cuts, and absolutely no Jio/Airtel network outside Kaza (only BSNL works, sometimes). You'll eat a lot of local Tibetan food, experience extreme temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down, and witness landscapes that change color every hour. Luxury here is finding a bucket of hot water.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real threat. If you rush the ascent via Manali, you will likely get sick. Take the Shimla route to acclimatize.
  • The roads from Manali to Kaza are practically non-existent in patches. It's a bone-rattling off-road experience.
  • Medical facilities are basic and scarce. Bring your own first-aid, prescribed meds, and Diamox.
  • Toilets in homestays or on the road are often traditional dry compost pits. Leave your squeamishness at home.
  • Do not rely on ATMs in Kaza. They are frequently out of cash or out of order. Carry enough physical cash from Shimla or Manali.

How to Reach

The best way is to drive the complete loop: start from Chandigarh/Delhi, go via Shimla, Kinnaur, Kaza, Chandratal, and exit via Manali. You can hire an SUV, join a group tour in a tempo traveler, or take the HRTC buses if you are on a tight budget. Nearest airport/train station is Chandigarh, but it's still a 2-day drive just to enter the valley.

Travel Tips
1Do not rush the circuit. Keep at least 7-9 days for the full loop to acclimatize properly.
2Download offline maps on Google Maps; you will lose network frequently.
3Carry a physical map or a guidebook. It helps when locals are not around to ask for directions.
4Pack in a rucksack, not a hard-shell trolley suitcase. Trolleys are a nightmare to drag on dirt paths and take up too much space in cars.
5Keep a buffer day in your itinerary. Landslides, road closures, or car breakdowns are common.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Food takes time to prepare at high altitudes. Order your meals well in advance at cafes or inform your homestay early about your dinner plans.

Culture & Etiquette
  • Always walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas (Chortens) and Mani walls.
  • Do not touch thangkas (religious paintings) or artifacts inside monasteries.
  • Dress modestly when entering monasteries; avoid shorts or sleeveless tops.
  • Water is incredibly scarce in the high-altitude desert. Do not waste it at your homestays.

FAQs

Can I do the Spiti circuit in a hatchback like a Swift or Alto?
Technically yes, locals do it all the time. Practically? It's going to ruin your car's suspension and underbelly, especially on the Manali-Kaza stretch. High ground clearance vehicles (SUVs/Crossovers) are highly recommended.
Which route is better: via Shimla or via Manali?
Always start from Shimla and end at Manali. The elevation gain via Shimla is gradual, which helps your body acclimatize and prevents Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Going via Manali takes you from 2,000m to 4,000m+ in a matter of hours, which is a recipe for disaster.
Will my mobile network work in Spiti?
Jio and Airtel will die as soon as you cross Kinnaur or Rohtang. Only BSNL and Jio (recently installed in Kaza only) work in the main town of Kaza. In villages like Hikkim, Langza, or Chandratal, expect zero connectivity.
Is it safe for a solo female traveler?
Spiti is incredibly safe when it comes to crime; the locals are respectful and helpful. The real dangers are the terrain, weather, and logistics. Joining a group tour is highly recommended for peace of mind regarding transport and breakdowns.
Are there ATMs in Spiti?
There is an SBI ATM in Kaza, but it is notoriously unreliable. It often runs out of cash or loses satellite connection. Withdraw all the cash you need in Shimla, Rampur, or Manali before heading up.
Do I need to carry an oxygen cylinder?
For a standard summer trip via Shimla, no. Just acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and carry Diamox (consult your doctor). However, portable oxygen cans are good for emergencies, and group tour operators usually carry proper cylinders.
What is a dry compost toilet?
Due to freezing temperatures and water scarcity, many Spiti homestays use traditional dry toilets. It's a room with a hole in the floor over a pit. You do your business and throw a shovel of dry mud/husk over it. No flush, no water. Use toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
When does Chandratal Lake open?
The road to Chandratal usually opens in mid-June and closes by early October, depending on the snow clearance at Kunzum Pass. You cannot visit it in winter.
Can I buy alcohol in Spiti?
Yes, basic liquor is available in Kaza. However, drinking alcohol at high altitudes dehydrates you and masks the symptoms of AMS. It is strongly advised to avoid alcohol until you are fully acclimatized, or better yet, skip it entirely.
