What to Expect

Expect long, bumpy, and sometimes terrifying drives on roads literally cut into half-tunnels in the rock. Expect your jaw to drop at the sheer scale of the Baspa Valley. You'll find a fascinating blend of Hinduism and Buddhism, wooden temples with intricate carvings, and locals who are as tough as the terrain. Do not expect luxury resorts, reliable 5G, or active nightlife. This is a place to wake up at 6 AM, freeze your fingers taking photos, and sleep by 10 PM.

How to Reach

The most common route is to fly or take a train to Chandigarh or Delhi, then travel by road. From Chandigarh, it's a grueling 10-12 hour drive to the gateway of Kinnaur via Shimla and Narkanda on NH5. HRTC buses run daily from Chandigarh and Shimla to Reckong Peo, but they are not for the faint-hearted. Hiring a sturdy SUV or joining a tempo-traveler group tour is the most practical way to travel.

FAQs

Is Kinnaur safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, crime rates are practically zero and locals are incredibly respectful. The real dangers are the terrain, weather, and altitude. Just avoid traveling on the highways after dark due to road safety.
Do I need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Kinnaur?
Indian citizens do not need an ILP to visit Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, or Nako. You only need it if you are crossing into Spiti via the Sumdo border. Foreign nationals need an ILP for the entire Kinnaur district.
Can I take my hatchback (Swift/i20) to Chitkul?
You can, but you'll need excellent driving skills. The road from Sangla to Chitkul is mostly dirt, rocks, and mud with steep drops. Ground clearance will be an issue; drive very slowly.
Will I get mobile network in Chitkul?
Jio and BSNL work decently well in Chitkul now. Airtel and Vi are completely dead once you cross Sangla.
Are there ATMs in Chitkul or Sangla?
There are no ATMs in Chitkul. Sangla has a couple, but they frequently run out of cash. Always withdraw enough cash in Rampur or Reckong Peo.
Kalpa or Chitkul - where should I stay?
Do both if you have time. Kalpa offers majestic, in-your-face views of the Kinner Kailash range. Chitkul is a high-altitude, raw valley experience by the Baspa river. If you only have one night, pick Chitkul for the adventure.
How bad is the altitude sickness (AMS) risk?
Kalpa is at 9,700 ft and Chitkul is at 11,300 ft. Mild headaches and breathlessness are common. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the first day, and don't rush your ascent. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately.
Is it safe to travel to Kinnaur in July/August?
Honestly, no. The region is notorious for massive landslides and road cave-ins during the monsoon. It's better to delay your trip to September.
