How to Reach

The Sundarbans is only accessible via Kolkata. From Kolkata, you must reach Godkhali or Sonakhali (the boat boarding points). By Road: You can hire a cab/tempo traveler from Kolkata to Godkhali (approx 3.5 hours, ₹3000-4000 for a cab). By Train (Budget option): Take a local train from Sealdah Station in Kolkata to Canning (1.5 hours, ₹20). From Canning, take a shared auto or magic van to Godkhali (1 hour, ₹50-100 per head). Once at Godkhali, your pre-booked motorized boat will be waiting to take you into the mangrove islands.

FAQs

Will we definitely see a Royal Bengal Tiger?
No. Sundarban tigers are famously elusive and the terrain is dense mangrove. Consider a sighting a massive bonus, not a guarantee.
Is it safe from tiger attacks?
Yes, for tourists. You never step off the boat into the wild. You only disembark at heavily fenced watchtowers and populated village islands.
Will I get motion sickness on the boat?
The delta rivers and creeks are usually calm, unlike the open sea. However, if you are highly sensitive, carry basic motion sickness pills.
Is there mobile network or WiFi?
No WiFi. BSNL and Vodafone work in patches near the villages, but deep inside the forest, you will have zero connectivity.
Do they serve vegetarian food?
Yes, but you must inform your tour operator in advance. Sundarban is heavily focused on seafood, so veg options need to be pre-planned.
Are there leeches?
Surprisingly, no. The water is brackish/saline, so leeches don't survive here. You will deal with mosquitos and mud crabs instead.
Can we book a boat on the spot at Godkhali?
Yes, but it's chaotic and requires intense haggling. For group trips, booking a package from Kolkata in advance is highly recommended.
Do we need passports or special permits?
Indians just need a valid ID (Aadhar/Voter ID). Foreigners need their passport and an extra permit from the forest department, which operators usually arrange.
