How to Reach
Fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). From there, hire a shared cab or private taxi to Manebhanjan (about 4-5 hours). Manebhanjan is the base camp where you arrange your permits, guides, and vintage Land Rovers to start the ascent.
FAQs
Can I reach Sandakphu without trekking?
Yes. You can hire a vintage 4x4 Land Rover from Manebhanjan. It takes about 4-5 hours to reach the top. Be warned: the 'road' is a steep, boulder-strewn track, and the ride is extremely bumpy.
Is the Sandakphu trek safe for beginners?
Yes, it's considered a moderate trek. There is no technical climbing involved, but you will be walking 10-15 km a day on steep inclines. Basic physical fitness and stamina are mandatory.
Will I definitely see Mount Everest?
It entirely depends on the weather. In October and November, your chances are over 90%. In April/May, afternoon clouds often roll in. During monsoon, your chances are zero.
Are there charging points for phones and cameras?
Very few. Most tea houses rely on solar power and will charge you INR 50-100 to plug in your device for an hour. Bring high-capacity power banks.
Do I need to hire a guide?
Yes, it is strictly mandatory to have a registered local guide to enter the Singalila National Park, whether you are trekking or taking a Land Rover.
Can I take my own SUV to Sandakphu?
Technically, yes, if it's a high-clearance 4x4. However, the local Land Rover syndicate heavily restricts outside vehicles to protect their livelihood. It's highly recommended to park your car in Manebhanjan and hire a local vehicle.
Is alcohol allowed on the trek?
You can find local millet beer called 'Tongba' at the tea houses. However, drinking alcohol at high altitudes dehydrates you and masks the symptoms of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is strongly advised against.
What are the washroom facilities like?
Basic. Expect Indian-style squat toilets, often located outside the main sleeping hut. There is usually no running water; you flush with a bucket. Carry your own toilet paper and wet wipes.
