FAQs
How long is the Khalia Top trek?
It's roughly 6-7 km one way from the Balati Bend starting point. It usually takes 4-5 hours to climb up and 2.5-3 hours to descend.
Can a complete beginner do the Khalia Top trek?
Yes, but you need decent cardiovascular fitness. It is not a flat walk; it's a steep incline almost the entire way. Start jogging a month before your trip.
Do I need to hire a guide?
In spring, summer, and autumn, the trail is well-marked and you can do it without a guide. In winter (Jan-Feb) when the trail is hidden under snow, a guide is strictly recommended.
Where do we stay at the top?
There is a KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) rest house about 1 km before the actual summit. You can book a bed there, or pitch your own tent in the designated camping areas.
Is there mobile network on the trek?
You'll get patchy Jio and Airtel signals for the first couple of kilometers. At the KMVN rest house and the top, expect zero network. Download your offline maps beforehand.
How do I reach Munsiyari from Delhi?
Take the overnight Ranikhet Express or Kathgodam Shatabdi to Kathgodam. From there, it's a 10-12 hour shared taxi or private cab ride to Munsiyari via Almora and Chaukori.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, Uttarakhand is generally very safe. However, the trek gets isolated, so if you are trekking solo, it's better to tag along with a group on the trail or hire a local guide for peace of mind.
Are there leeches on the trail?
During the monsoon months (July to early September), the forest section is notorious for leeches. Wear high socks and carry salt if you must trek then.
