How to Reach

Fly into Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) or take an overnight train from Delhi to Kathgodam (Ranikhet Express is a favorite). From Kathgodam, it is a grueling but beautiful 9-10 hour drive to the base camp at Lohajung. Shared sumos and taxis leave early morning (by 6:30 AM) from the Kathgodam taxi stand.

FAQs

Is Brahmatal harder than Kedarkantha?
Yes, slightly. Brahmatal has longer walking days and the summit day is more demanding. However, both are considered moderate winter treks suitable for fit beginners.
Do I need to take Diamox for this trek?
Not necessarily as a preventive measure, but you should carry it. The max altitude is around 12,250 ft. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and ascending slowly are usually enough. Always consult your doctor before taking it.
Are Quechua MH100 shoes enough for Brahmatal in winter?
No. In Jan/Feb, you will be walking in deep snow. MH100s are not waterproof enough and lack the ankle support needed. Upgrade to MH500 or similar waterproof trekking boots.
Is it safe for solo female trekkers?
The trail itself is safe, but going completely solo/DIY is not recommended due to weather unpredictability and lack of network. Join a group tour or hire a local guide from Lohajung.
Will I get phone network on the trek?
No. You will lose all network (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) an hour after leaving Lohajung base camp. Inform your family before you start the trek.
How cold does it actually get in December/January?
Daytime is a pleasant 5°C to 12°C if the sun is out. But once the sun sets, temperatures plummet. Expect night temps at campsites to drop between -5°C to -15°C.
Can I drink alcohol to stay warm at night?
Absolutely not. Alcohol severely hampers acclimatization, dehydrates you, and increases the risk of AMS and hypothermia. It is strictly banned on high-altitude treks.
What is the toilet situation?
At campsites, trek organizers set up dry pit toilet tents. You do your business in a hole and cover it with mud/sawdust. Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
