How to Reach

Mathura is incredibly accessible. From Delhi (150 km), the best way is via the Yamuna Expressway; a tempo traveler or private cab takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and costs ₹3000-₹5000 one way. Alternatively, the Gatimaan Express or Shatabdi trains from Hazrat Nizamuddin drop you in Mathura in just 1.5 hours (₹500-₹1000). From Mumbai or Bangalore, you must fly into Delhi or Agra (which is just 50 km/1 hour away from Mathura) and take a cab. Mathura Junction is also a major railway hub connected to almost every major Indian city.

FAQs

Is Mathura safe for all-girls groups?
Yes, but dress modestly and stick to groups in the evenings. The main challenge isn't safety from people, but managing aggressive crowds and monkeys.
Can I carry my phone into the temples?
You can in most smaller temples, but phones, smartwatches, and power banks are strictly banned inside the main Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex.
How do we deal with the monkeys?
Do not wear spectacles if you can avoid it (use contacts). Keep phones securely in pockets, carry a stick if walking in narrow lanes, and never eat openly on the streets.
Why are the temples closed in the afternoon?
According to local tradition, the deities rest in the afternoon. Almost all temples close between 12 PM and 4 PM, so plan your meals and rest during this window.
Is it possible to get non-vegetarian food or alcohol?
No. Mathura is a designated holy city. Meat, eggs, and alcohol are strictly prohibited and unavailable. Embrace the incredible local vegetarian cuisine instead.
Do we need a local guide?
It's highly recommended for group trips. A good guide will navigate the labyrinth of alleys, handle the e-rickshaw logistics, and keep touts away.
What is the best way to travel between Mathura and Vrindavan?
E-rickshaws and shared auto-rickshaws are the lifelines here. They are cheap, navigate traffic easily, and are readily available.
Is it okay to wear shorts?
No. Both men and women should wear clothes that cover their knees and shoulders. You will be denied entry to many temples otherwise.
