How to Reach
Agra is incredibly accessible. From Delhi, the quickest way is the Gatimaan Express train (1 hour 40 mins) from Nizamuddin Station. By road, the Yamuna Expressway is a smooth 3-4 hour drive from Delhi. Agra Cantt is the main railway station, well-connected to major Indian cities. The local airport has very limited flights.
FAQs
Is the Taj Mahal open every day?
No, the Taj Mahal is strictly closed on Fridays for general viewing. Plan your trip accordingly.
Is a day trip from Delhi enough?
Yes. Take the Gatimaan Express at 8:10 AM from Nizamuddin, reach Agra by 9:50 AM, see the Taj and Fort, and take the 5:50 PM train back. It's tiring but highly efficient.
Can I take my phone and camera inside the Taj?
Phones and basic cameras are allowed. Tripods, drones, laptops, extra batteries, and large bags are strictly banned. There are lockers outside, but it's a hassle.
Do I really need a guide?
For the Taj, yes, if you want the history and someone to take your photos (they double as photographers). Only hire Government-approved guides and agree on the price beforehand.
What's the best time for photography?
Sunrise. Get to the East or West gate 30 minutes before opening time. The marble changes color with the morning sun, and you beat the massive afternoon crowds.
Where should I buy Petha?
Panchi Petha in Sadar Bazaar. Do not trust your auto driver when he takes you to a 'factory outlet'—they get a commission for taking you to fake shops.
What are the shoe covers for?
To protect the white marble of the main mausoleum. If you buy the expensive ticket (with mausoleum access), they are provided free. Otherwise, you must walk barefoot.
Is Agra safe at night?
It's generally safe around the tourist hubs (Fatehabad Road, Sadar Bazaar), but there's no real nightlife anyway. Avoid wandering into poorly lit alleys in the old city.
