How to Reach

Fly into Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai or Pune International Airport (PNQ). Both cities are major railheads. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway connects the two cities by road in about 3 hours via bus or cab.

FAQs

Should I take the local train or cabs in Mumbai?
Take the local train if you are traveling North-South during off-peak hours (11 AM - 4 PM) to save massive amounts of time and money. Take an Uber/Ola if you have luggage or if it's rush hour. Auto-rickshaws only operate in the suburbs (Bandra and northwards).
Is Pune's nightlife better than Mumbai's?
They are different. Mumbai has high-end, glamorous clubs and legendary dive bars. Pune (especially Koregaon Park and Balewadi High Street) has a massive, vibrant brewery and pub culture driven by its huge student and IT population. Pune is generally cheaper.
What's the best weekend trek from both cities?
Rajmachi Fort and Harishchandragad are legendary. For something hardcore, the Durg Dhakoba trek or Alang-Madan-Kulang (AMK) will test your limits.
Is it safe for female travelers at night?
Mumbai is arguably the safest major city in India for women at night. You'll see women traveling alone in local trains at midnight. Pune is also very safe, especially around student hubs. Standard situational awareness still applies.
How much does a weekend trip to Lonavala actually cost?
If you rent a private villa with a group, expect to pay around INR 2,500 - 4,000 per person per night including food. Budget dorms and homestays are available for INR 800 - 1,500.
Do I need a guide for Sahyadri treks?
For popular treks like Sinhagad, Lohagad, or Kalsubai, no. The trails are heavily marked. For deep jungle treks like Bhimashankar or remote ridge walks like Durg Dhakoba, hiring a local guide from the base village is highly recommended.
Can we drink on the beaches or forts?
No. Drinking on beaches in Mumbai is illegal and heavily policed. Drinking on Maratha forts is considered highly disrespectful to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and will get you into serious trouble with locals and authorities.
How do I travel between Mumbai and Pune?
The Shivneri AC buses run by MSRTC leave every 15-30 minutes from Dadar (Mumbai) to Swargate/Station (Pune) and cost around INR 500. Trains like the Deccan Queen are also a romantic, scenic option.
