Honest Heads-Up
  • Do not attempt this if you are a beginner. AMK is strictly for experienced trekkers.
  • If you have a fear of heights (acrophobia) or vertigo, sit this one out. The exposure on the rock patches is severe.
  • Do not go without a certified guide and proper climbing gear (ropes, harness, carabiners). A slip here is fatal.
  • Water is scarce during the summer months; you must carry at least 3-4 liters daily.
  • Monsoon trekking here is highly dangerous due to slippery rock faces and is often banned or strongly discouraged.

How to Reach

The most common route is to take a local Central Railway train from Mumbai to Kasara. From Kasara station, you can hire a shared jeep to the base villages of Ambewadi or Samrad (approx. 2-3 hours drive). If coming from Pune, you can drive via Sangamner to reach the base village.

Travel Tips
1Trim your toenails before the trek; the steep descents will brutally jam your toes into your shoes otherwise.
2Pack everything inside your backpack in plastic bags or dry bags. Weather in the Sahyadris can be unpredictable.
3Carry energy bars, dates, and electoral powder. You will burn thousands of calories.
4Listen to your trek leader unconditionally. If they say a rock patch is unsafe or you need to rope up, do not argue.
5Keep your backpack as light as possible. Every extra kilo feels like ten when you are climbing an 80-degree rock face.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

There is no food available on the mountain. You must carry your own high-energy snacks (protein bars, dry fruits, theplas) and rely on your group operator to cook basic meals (like Maggi or Khichdi) at the caves.

FAQs

Is AMK safe for beginners?
Absolutely not. AMK involves technical rock climbing, 50-foot rappelling, and traversing narrow ridges with sheer drops. You need prior trekking experience in the Sahyadris and good upper body strength.
Can I do the AMK trek without a guide?
Unless you are a certified mountaineer carrying your own ropes, harnesses, and carabiners, going without a local guide or an organized group is practically suicidal. The route is confusing and the climbs require gear.
Where do we sleep during the trek?
Accommodation is as raw as it gets. You will sleep inside ancient rock-cut caves on Alang and Madan forts. You must carry your own sleeping bag and a foam mat.
Is there drinking water available on top?
There are ancient rock-cut water cisterns on the forts. The water is generally potable, but it's highly recommended to carry water purification tablets or a life straw to be safe.
Are there any washrooms on the trek?
No. There are zero facilities on the mountain. You will have to go out in the open. Carry toilet paper, a trowel to bury your waste, and hand sanitizer.
How many days does the AMK trek take?
A standard AMK traverse takes 2 nights and 3 days. Some extremely fit groups do it in 2 days, but 3 days allows for a safer pace and time to enjoy the views.
Which base village should I start from?
The trek is usually started from Ambewadi village and ends at Samrad village (or vice versa). Most group tours arrange transport from Kasara railway station to the base.
What shoes should I wear?
Trekking shoes with excellent grip and ankle support are non-negotiable. Do not attempt AMK in running shoes or sneakers; you will slip on the rock patches.
