How to Reach

The most budget-friendly way is taking a local Central Railway train from Mumbai to Kasara (or from Pune to Kalyan, then to Kasara). From Kasara, share a local jeep to Shendi (Bhandardara). From Shendi, you can either take a bumpy 22km jeep ride to Ratanwadi or a scenic 45-minute boat ride across Arthur Lake (highly recommended). If driving, take the Mumbai-Nashik highway, turn off at Ghoti, and head towards Bhandardara.

Travel Tips
1Start your trek by 7 AM to beat the intense afternoon sun and the massive weekend crowds at the ladders.
2Take the boat ride across Arthur Lake instead of driving the last 20km to Ratanwadi. It saves time and your spine.
3Do not trust the monkeys near the caves. They are known to snatch bags right out of trekkers' hands.
4Always carry cash. UPI rarely works at the base village due to poor network connectivity.
5If doing a night trek, hire a local guide. The forest trail can be confusing in the dark.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Order your post-trek lunch at a local villager's house in Ratanwadi *before* you start the trek. By the time you descend, hot, fresh food will be waiting for you.

FAQs

Is Ratangad suitable for beginners?
It's a moderate trek. Beginners with good cardiovascular fitness can do it, but it will test your endurance. If you've never hiked before, your legs will hate you the next day.
How long does the trek take?
It takes about 3 to 4 hours to ascend from Ratanwadi and 2.5 to 3 hours to descend, depending on your pace and the crowd at the ladders.
Are there washrooms on the fort?
No. The only washrooms available are at the base village (Ratanwadi) or at local homestays. Once you start the trail, you are in the wild.
Can we camp at Ratangad?
Yes! The natural rock caves near the top can accommodate 30-40 people. You can also pitch tents on the plateau, but it gets extremely windy.
Boat ride vs. Road trip to Ratanwadi?
Always choose the boat ride from Bhandardara across Arthur Lake if available. It takes 45 minutes, offers stunning views, and saves you from a bone-rattling 2-hour drive on terrible roads.
Is it safe during heavy rains?
It's thrilling but risky. The rock patches and ladders become extremely slippery. Trekking groups manage it with ropes, but solo/amateur trekkers should avoid peak monsoon days.
Will we get food on top?
On weekends, locals set up small stalls selling Maggi, lime water (nimbu pani), and buttermilk near the caves. On weekdays, you must carry your own food.
Are there leeches?
Yes, plenty of them during the monsoon (July to September). Carry a small pouch of salt or spray a mixture of Dettol and water on your shoes to keep them away.
