How to Reach

The most common route is to reach Nashik (via train or bus from Mumbai/Pune). From Nashik, take an MSRTC ST bus or hire a local cab to Satana, then to Taharabad. From Taharabad, take a shared jeep (tum-tum) to the base villages: Waghambe or Salherwadi for Salher, and Mulher village for Mulher fort. Total travel time from Nashik to the base is about 3-4 hours.

FAQs

Is Salher harder than Kalsubai?
Yes. While Kalsubai has iron ladders to help you up, Salher relies on steep, ancient rock-cut steps. It requires better stamina and balance, especially if you carry a heavy backpack.
Can we camp inside the caves at Salher?
Absolutely. The caves at Salher can comfortably accommodate 30-40 people. However, you need to bring your own sleeping bags and mats as it gets freezing at night.
Is there food available on the fort?
No. You must pre-order your food at the base villages (Salherwadi, Waghambe, or Mulher village). The villagers can pack lunch for you to carry up, but there are no stalls on the trail.
Do we need to hire a local guide?
If you are a beginner or trekking at night, yes. The trails can be confusing, especially the traverse between Salher and Salota. Locals charge around ₹500-₹800 for the day and are worth it.
Is it safe for female trekkers?
Yes, it is generally safe, especially in groups. The local villagers are respectful and helpful. However, avoid trekking solo at night due to the remote nature of the area.
How long does it take to do both Salher and Mulher?
To do justice to both, you need a 2-day itinerary. Day 1: Salher and Salota (camp at Salherwadi). Day 2: Drive to Mulher base, trek Mulher, Mora, and Hargad, then head back.
Is there mobile network on the trek?
Network is extremely patchy. You might get a faint Jio or Airtel signal at the very top, but assume you will be off the grid for the duration of the trek.
Are there wild animals?
Apart from aggressive monkeys near the caves, you might spot wild boars or snakes in the dense undergrowth, especially post-monsoon. Stick to the main trails.
