FAQs

Can we take our car all the way to Ratanwadi?
Yes, but the 16km stretch from Bhandardara (Shendi) to Ratanwadi is notoriously bumpy and pothole-ridden. SUVs handle it fine, but hatchbacks will struggle, especially in the monsoon. Many prefer parking at Bhandardara and taking the 45-minute boat ride.
Is the boat ride operational during heavy monsoons?
It depends on the water level and weather warnings. During extreme rainfall or high winds, the forest department suspends boat services across Arthur Lake for safety.
Are there leeches on the Ratangad trek?
Absolutely. From July to September, the trail is infested with them. Wear full trekking pants, use leech socks if you have them, and carry a small pouch of salt or a spray bottle of Dettol water.
Is Ratanwadi safe for solo female travelers?
The village locals are highly respectful and the crime rate is practically zero. However, because there is no mobile network and the trek is isolated on weekdays, solo trekking is not recommended. Join a group or hire a local village guide.
Do I need a guide for Ratangad?
If you are trekking on a monsoon weekend, you can just follow the crowds. But on a weekday or in summer, the forest trails can be confusing. Hiring a local villager for ₹300-₹500 is highly recommended and supports the local economy.
Can we camp on top of Ratangad Fort?
You can pitch tents inside the natural cave on the fort, which accommodates about 20-30 people. However, carrying tents and heavy gear up the ladders is tough. Many prefer to camp at the base in Ratanwadi.
Are there any ATMs or card machines in Ratanwadi?
None. The nearest ATM is in Shendi (Bhandardara), and even that is frequently out of cash. Carry all the hard cash you will need from Mumbai, Pune, or Kasara.
What is the network availability like?
Assume zero network. You will lose signal about 10 kms before reaching the village. Inform your family before you leave Bhandardara.
