Fly or take a train to Jorhat, Assam. From Jorhat town, take a shared auto or taxi to Nimati Ghat (approx. 14 km). From Nimati Ghat, board a government or private ferry to Kamalabari Ghat in Majuli. The ferry ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

How do I book the ferry to Majuli?

You can book online via the Inland Water Transport (IWT) Assam portal. It's highly recommended to book a day in advance to secure a spot, especially if you are taking a vehicle. Otherwise, you can buy tickets at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat.

Can I take my car or bike to the island?

Yes, Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferries accommodate cars and bikes. However, slots for cars are limited, so arrive early and book online.

Is one day enough for Majuli?

Absolutely not. The ferry ride takes time, and the island is huge (over 350 sq km). You need at least 2 nights to experience the Satras, the villages, and the sunsets without rushing.

Where is the best area to stay?

Garamur and Kamalabari are the most central areas with the best access to homestays, cycle rentals, and small eateries.

Is alcohol allowed in Majuli?

Commercial alcohol is generally frowned upon, especially near the Satras (monasteries). However, in the Mishing tribal villages, you can (and should) try 'Apong', their traditional homemade rice beer.

Are there ATMs on the island?

Yes, mostly in Garamur and Kamalabari, but they frequently run out of cash or face server issues. Carry enough cash from Jorhat to cover your entire stay.

Is it safe for solo female travelers?

Extremely safe. The crime rate is negligible, and locals are incredibly hospitable and respectful. Just be mindful of the early sunsets and lack of streetlights.

You can't walk it—the distances between Satras and villages are vast. Renting a bicycle or a scooty from your homestay is the best way to get around.
