How to Reach

The most common and practical way to reach Kaziranga for groups is via Guwahati. Fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati. From there, Kaziranga (Kohora) is about 200 km away, a 4.5 to 5-hour drive via NH27. For a group, hiring a private Innova or SUV from the airport costs around ₹4000-₹5000 one way. Alternatively, you can take an AC bus from Guwahati's ISBT to Kohora for about ₹500 per person. Jorhat Airport is closer (90 km / 2 hours), but flights are less frequent and usually more expensive than flying into Guwahati.

FAQs

Which safari zone is the best in Kaziranga?
For guaranteed rhinos, go to the Western Zone (Bagori). For a mix of wildlife and scenic landscapes, the Central Zone (Kohora) is best. Birdwatchers should hit the Eastern Zone (Agaratoli).
How much does a jeep safari cost for a group?
A single Gypsy costs around ₹3500 to ₹4500 depending on the zone, plus entry and camera fees. Since it seats up to 6 people, it breaks down to about ₹700-₹900 per head.
Do we need to book safaris in advance?
Yes, especially in December and January. While you can sometimes get jeeps on the spot in Kohora, booking through your hotel or official portals a few weeks ahead saves you from morning chaos.
Is it safe to drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga at night?
It's generally safe, but not recommended. The NH27 is a good four-lane highway, but heavy truck traffic, fog in winter, and wildlife corridors near the park make daytime driving much safer.
Can we spot tigers in Kaziranga?
Kaziranga has a high density of tigers, but spotting them is very rare because the elephant grass is over 10 feet tall. Don't go expecting a Jim Corbett or Ranthambore tiger experience.
Is alcohol allowed in Kaziranga?
Inside the national park, absolutely not. However, you can consume alcohol at your private resort or homestay in the evenings. Buy your stock in Guwahati or larger towns on the way.
What should we wear on the safari?
Earth tones—greens, browns, and khakis. Avoid bright colors like red or neon, which disturb the animals. Dress in heavy layers for early morning safaris.
How many days are enough for Kaziranga?
2 nights and 3 days is the sweet spot. Arrive day 1, do an evening safari. Day 2 do a morning safari in a different zone and visit the Orchid Park. Depart day 3.
