FAQs
Do Indians need a passport to visit Andaman?
No, Andaman and Nicobar is an Indian territory. A valid Aadhar card or Voter ID is enough for flights and hotels. However, you will need a passport if you are an OCI cardholder or foreign national.
Is scuba diving safe if I don't know how to swim?
Yes! The Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program is specifically designed for non-swimmers. An instructor will hold your tank and guide you the entire time. Havelock is the best place for this.
Which network works best in Andaman?
Airtel and BSNL are the most reliable. Jio has launched services and works decently in Port Blair and parts of Havelock, but do not expect 5G speeds. Expect to be offline for large chunks of your trip.
Is it cheaper than going to the Maldives, Thailand, or Bali?
Compared to luxury Maldives, yes. Compared to Thailand or Bali, Andaman can actually be more expensive due to high domestic flight costs and expensive inter-island private ferries (Makruzz/Nautika).
How do we travel between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil?
You must take ferries. Private ferries like Makruzz, Nautika, and Green Ocean are faster, AC-equipped, and cost around INR 1500-2000 per sector. Government ferries are cheaper but harder to book online.
Can we rent scooties on the islands?
Yes, scooty rentals are the best way to explore Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), and Neil (Shaheed Dweep). They cost about INR 500-800 per day. Fuel stations close early, so tank up in the morning.
Is vegetarian food easily available?
Yes, but options are slightly limited compared to the mainland. Port Blair has good pure veg restaurants (like Annapurna). In Havelock and Neil, most resorts offer veg options, but expect to pay a premium for fresh vegetables since they are shipped in.
Are the tribal areas open for tourists?
Absolutely not. The Jarawa and Sentinelese tribal reserves are strictly protected. You will pass through a buffer zone on the Andaman Trunk Road to Baratang, but stopping, interacting, or taking photos is a serious criminal offense.
