What to Expect

Expect terrifyingly narrow cliff-side roads, zero mobile network (BSNL might give you one bar if the wind blows right), basic homestays, and some of the most dramatic, untouched Himalayan landscapes in India. The new BRO roads mean you hardly have to trek, but the altitude (over 15,000 ft) will still test your lungs. You'll be eating basic dal-chawal and sleeping in multi-sharing rooms.

Honest Heads-Up
  • High risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Acclimatization is non-negotiable.
  • Landslides can leave you stranded for days, especially in late summer.
  • Washrooms are mostly basic pit stops or squat toilets. Do not expect western commodes.
  • Zero nightlife, cafes, or luxury amenities. You are in a sensitive border area.
  • Strictly a vegetarian and alcohol-free zone out of respect for local beliefs.

How to Reach

Take a train (like the Ranikhet Express) or bus from New Delhi to Kathgodam/Haldwani. From there, it is a tiring 10-12 hour drive to Dharchula. Dharchula serves as the base camp where you get your permits. From Dharchula, you must switch to local 4x4 vehicles (Bolero/Camper) to navigate the rugged terrain up to Gunji, Om Parvat, and Adi Kailash.

Travel Tips
1Acclimatize properly at Dharchula and Gunji; do not rush the ascent to Jolingkong.
2Keep your Inner Line Permit and Aadhar card handy in a waterproof pouch; you will be stopped at multiple ITBP checkposts.
3Pack wet wipes and dry shampoo; getting hot water for bathing is a luxury and bathing in the freezing cold is a bad idea.
4Treat the ITBP personnel with respect; they are extremely helpful to tourists in distress.

Expect basic, repetitive meals—mostly dal, rice, roti, and sabzi. Carry your own protein bars, dry fruits, and chocolates for instant energy during the long drives.

FAQs

Do I need to trek to see Adi Kailash?
Not anymore. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has built roads right up to Jolingkong base camp. You only need to walk about 2-3 km to reach Parvati Sarovar for the best views.
How do I get the Inner Line Permit (ILP)?
The ILP is issued by the SDM office in Dharchula. You need a valid Aadhar card, passport-size photos, and a physical medical fitness certificate from a registered doctor in Dharchula. Group tour operators usually handle this paperwork for you.
Can I drive my own SUV or bike?
Technically yes, but it is highly discouraged unless you have extreme off-roading experience in the Himalayas. The roads from Tawaghat onwards are brutal, narrow, and unpaved. Local 4x4 taxis (Bolero/Camper) are the safest bet.
Is Om Parvat included in this trip?
Yes, almost all group tours and itineraries combine Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. You visit Om Parvat via the Nabhidhang route from Gunji.
Is there any mobile network?
Jio, Airtel, and VI will drop off completely after Dharchula. Only BSNL works in patches around Gunji, but do not rely on it. Inform your family you'll be off the grid.
Should I take Diamox for altitude sickness?
Consult your doctor before the trip. However, because the road takes you from 3,000 ft to 15,000+ ft rapidly, most experienced operators highly recommend starting a Diamox course to prevent AMS.
Are there ATMs on the way?
The last reliable ATM is in Dharchula. Carry enough hard cash for the entire upper circuit as UPI does not work due to zero internet.
Is it safe for women traveling solo or in a group?
Yes, the Kumaon region is generally very safe, and the heavy presence of the ITBP and Indian Army adds to the security. However, joining a group tour is recommended for logistical support.

Group Trips to Adi kailash

If you are looking for the ultimate Himalayan adventure, booking group tours to Adi Kailash should be at the top of your bucket list. Nestled deep in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, Adi Kailash offers a raw, unfiltered experience that rivals the traditional Kailash Mansarovar yatra, but without the hassle of crossing international borders. For Indian travelers aged 20-35, an Adi Kailash group trip is less about luxury and more about testing your endurance on some of the most thrilling off-road trails in India. With packages starting around ₹35,000, these group expeditions usually cover the complete circuit, including the mesmerizing Om Parvat, Gunji, and Jolingkong. Traveling in a group is highly recommended here, not just to split the hefty 4x4 vehicle costs from Dharchula, but also for safety in high-altitude zones where Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real threat. Getting the Inner Line Permit and medical clearances can be a bureaucratic headache, which is why opting for a managed Uttarakhand group tour saves you time and stress. Expect zero mobile network, basic homestay food, and squat toilets, but the reward is standing at 15,000 feet, staring at the sacred peaks of Chhota Kailash. Whether you are a spiritual seeker or a hardcore adventure junkie, an Adi Kailash trip package delivers an unforgettable, rugged mountain journey.
