How to Reach

Direct flights are the most convenient way to reach Istanbul from India. IndiGo and Turkish Airlines operate daily direct flights from New Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul Airport (IST). The flight takes about 6.5 to 7 hours. Round-trip fares typically range from ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 depending on how early you book. From Bangalore, Chennai, or other cities, you will usually have a short layover in the Middle East (via Emirates, Qatar Airways, or Air Arabia) or connect through Delhi/Mumbai. Once you land at IST, the Havaist airport shuttle bus is the cheapest and most reliable way for groups to reach the city center (Taksim or Sultanahmet). It costs about ₹500 per person and has dedicated luggage space, making it much better than negotiating with airport taxis.

FAQs

Is Istanbul safe for Indian women traveling in a group?
Yes, it is generally very safe. However, expect some harmless but annoying catcalling in tourist bazaars. Dress modestly when visiting mosques (cover shoulders, knees, and hair).
Do Indians need a visa for Turkey?
Yes. If you hold a valid US, UK, Ireland, or Schengen visa, you can get a Turkish e-Visa online in 5 minutes. Otherwise, you must apply for a sticker visa via VFS Global, which takes 2-3 weeks.
Is Istanbul vegetarian-friendly?
Better than you think. While it's a meat-heavy culture, vegetarians can easily survive on pide (Turkish pizza), kumpir (stuffed baked potatoes), lentil soups, simit (sesame bread), and endless mezze platters.
How much cash should we carry?
Credit/forex cards work in 90% of places, but carry around 2000-3000 Turkish Lira for street food vendors, small bazaar stalls, public toilets, and tipping.
Where is the best area for a group to stay?
Stay in Sultanahmet if you want to be walking distance to history (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia). Stay in Beyoglu/Taksim or Kadikoy if your group prioritizes nightlife, cafes, and modern restaurants.
Can we drink the tap water?
No, it is not recommended. Stick to bottled water, which is incredibly cheap and sold at every corner kiosk.
Is public transport easy to figure out?
Extremely. Buy an 'Istanbulkart' at the airport or any major station, load it with lira, and tap it for trams, metros, ferries, and funiculars. It's the fastest way to get around.
Are the bazaars actually cheap?
The Grand Bazaar is famous but mostly overpriced for tourists. It's great for photos and the experience. For actual shopping, buy souvenirs in local markets or on the Asian side (Kadikoy).
