How to Reach
Take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh to Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj. From McLeod Ganj bus stand, hire a local taxi or auto to Dharamkot or Gallu Devi Temple, which is the actual starting point of the trek. The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), about 20 km away.
FAQs
Is camping actually allowed at the top of Triund?
It fluctuates. Due to NGT rulings, the Forest Department frequently bans camping directly on the Triund ridge to protect the ecosystem. You usually have to hike back down to base or camp at designated lower areas like Magic View. Always check the current week's rules at the Gallu Devi checkpoint.
Can a complete beginner do the Triund trek?
Yes, absolutely. It is considered a beginner-friendly trek, but don't underestimate it. It's a continuous uphill climb, and the last 1-2 km (the 22 curves) are steep and tiring. Basic cardiovascular fitness is required.
Do I need a guide for Triund?
Not during the primary seasons (March-June, Sept-Nov). The trail is incredibly well-marked and busy. However, if you are trekking in winter (Jan-Feb) when there is heavy snow, a local guide is highly recommended for safety.
Are there washrooms on the trail?
Practically no. There are a few makeshift dry pit toilets near some cafes, but they are incredibly unhygienic. Be prepared for a rugged experience.
Can I do Triund in a single day?
Yes. If you start by 8 AM from Gallu Devi Temple, you can reach the top by 12 PM, spend a couple of hours, and descend by 5 PM before dark. This is the most common way to do it now given camping restrictions.
Is alcohol allowed on the trek?
No. The Forest Department checks bags at the Gallu Devi checkpoint and strictly confiscates alcohol and Bluetooth speakers. Respect the mountains.
Will I get mobile network at the top?
Jio and Airtel work patchily on the way up. At the actual ridge, the network is almost zero. Inform your family before you start the final ascent.
Where does the trek actually start?
You can start walking from McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot, but the actual forest trail begins at Gallu Devi Temple. You can take a taxi up to Gallu Devi to save yourself 2-3 km of walking on a motorable road.
