How to Reach

Direct flights from Delhi/Mumbai to Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) via ANA or Japan Airlines take about 8 hours. Budget options include VietJet (with a layover in Vietnam) or Singapore Airlines. Haneda is much closer to the city center (30 mins vs 1.5 hours from Narita).

FAQs

Is the JR Pass worth it for a 7-day trip?
Not anymore. After the October 2023 price hike, a 7-day JR Pass costs around ₹28,000. Unless you are doing a round trip to Kyoto AND visiting Hiroshima or Kanazawa, it’s cheaper to buy individual Shinkansen tickets.
Can Indian vegetarians survive in Tokyo?
Yes, but you need the HappyCow app. 'Vegetarian' in Japan often means 'no red meat', and they will still serve you fish broth (dashi). Stick to specialized vegan spots, Indian restaurants, or use a translation card explaining your diet.
Do I need to carry a lot of cash?
Cash is no longer king like it was pre-COVID, but it's still necessary. You can use an IC Card (Suica/Pasmo) on Apple Wallet or a Forex card at 7-Eleven/FamilyMart, but small ramen shops, izakayas, and temples still require physical Yen.
I have tattoos. Can I still visit an Onsen?
Most public onsens (hot springs) ban tattoos due to Yakuza associations. You have three options: cover small ones with waterproof bandages, find a 'tattoo-friendly' onsen online, or book a hotel with a private reservable bath (kashikiri-buro).
Is Tokyo safe at night?
Absurdly safe. You can walk back to your hotel at 3 AM through dark alleys without looking over your shoulder. The only minor annoyance is aggressive club promoters in Kabukicho or Roppongi—just ignore them.
Do people speak English?
Basic English is understood at major hotels and tourist spots, but generally, English proficiency is low. Download Japanese on Google Translate for offline use and use the camera feature to read menus.
What's the best SIM card option for Indians?
If your phone supports eSIM, download Ubigi or Airalo before you fly and activate it on arrival. It's much cheaper and faster than buying a physical tourist SIM at Narita airport.
How much walking is actually involved?
A lot. Expect 15,000 to 25,000 steps a day. The subway stations are massive, and transferring lines often means walking a kilometer underground. Bring the most comfortable, broken-in sneakers you own.
