FAQs

Is the SAARC discount still valid for Indians?
Yes! While foreigners pay $30 (approx 2,500 INR), Indian passport holders pay exactly half ($15 / approx 1,250 INR). You MUST carry your physical physical passport to the ticket counter to claim this.
Pidurangala Rock vs Sigiriya - which is better?
Do both if you can. Pidurangala is much cheaper (around 250 INR), offers a raw hike, and gives you the iconic view OF Sigiriya. Sigiriya has the actual ancient ruins, frescoes, and historical prestige.
How long does the Sigiriya climb take?
For an average fitness level, it takes about 45-60 minutes to reach the top, and 30-40 minutes to get down. Plan for 2.5 to 3 hours total to explore the ruins and take photos.
Can I fly my drone at Sigiriya?
Absolutely not. The airspace around Sigiriya is a strict no-fly zone controlled by the military. Your drone will be confiscated, and you could face heavy fines.
Is there drinking water available on the rock?
No. Once you pass the ticket checkpoint, there are no vendors. Carry at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person. You will sweat buckets.
Are there washrooms at the top?
No. The only washrooms are located near the main entrance/ticket office. Use them before you start the climb.
Can I climb in flip-flops?
You can, but you shouldn't. The metal stairs are narrow, and the rock can be uneven. Wear proper sneakers or hiking sandals with good grip.
Is it safe for older parents or people with bad knees?
Honestly, no. It's 1,200 steep stairs. If they have knee issues or heart conditions, they can explore the beautiful water gardens at the base, but the summit climb is not recommended.
