Let’s get one thing straight: the Serengeti is not a zoo, and it is not a budget backpacker destination. It is a vast, dusty, and brutally beautiful wilderness where nature runs th...

What to Expect

Expect early wake-up calls (5:30 AM is standard), incredibly bumpy dirt roads, zero cell reception, and a lot of waiting around followed by bursts of intense adrenaline. You will be living out of a Land Cruiser. The camps range from basic canvas tents with bucket showers to hyper-luxurious lodges, but the wildlife doesn't care how much you paid. Expect to be disconnected from the world and deeply connected to the food chain.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Tsetse flies are relentless in certain areas (like the Western Corridor). Their bites hurt. Do not wear black or dark blue, which attracts them.
  • The roads will break your back. It is known as the 'Serengeti massage' for a reason. If you have severe spinal issues, reconsider.
  • It is expensive. Park fees alone are around $70-$80 USD per day before you even eat or sleep.
  • Animals don't work on a schedule. You might drive for four hours and see nothing but grass, then see a leopard kill in the last ten minutes.

How to Reach

From India, fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) via Ethiopian Airlines, or fly into Nairobi (NBO) via IndiGo/Kenya Airways and take the Riverside Shuttle bus (6 hours) to Arusha, Tanzania. Arusha is the gateway town. From Arusha, it's a 6-8 hour drive to the Serengeti gates, or a 1-hour bush flight on a tiny Cessna plane (expensive but saves a day of driving).

Travel Tips
1Pack everything in a soft-sided duffel bag. Hard suitcases will not fit in the safari vehicles.
2Bring a good quality dust buff or scarf. You will be eating dust all day.
3Do not yell or stand up abruptly when close to animals. The animals view the jeep as one giant, non-threatening entity. Don't break the silhouette.
4Download all offline entertainment and maps beforehand. Wi-Fi at camps is either non-existent or slower than dial-up.
5Bring USD printed after 2013. Tanzanian banks and vendors will reject older bills, torn bills, or bills with ink marks.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Eat a heavy breakfast. Lunches are usually packed 'picnic boxes' eaten under a tree in the park (watch out for monkeys stealing your food). Dinners at camp are the main culinary event.

FAQs

Do Indians need a Yellow Fever vaccine for Tanzania?
Technically, Tanzania only requires it if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country (like Kenya). However, if you have a long layover in Nairobi or Addis Ababa, border officials in Kilimanjaro often ask for the Yellow Card. Just get the shot in India at a government hospital before you leave to avoid bribes or hassles. Also, take your Malaria prophylaxis.
Is it possible to do the Serengeti on a tight backpacker budget?
Honestly, no. The Serengeti is not Southeast Asia. Daily park fees are around $70-$80 USD, plus camping fees of $30, before you even rent a specialized 4x4 or hire a guide. Group tours starting around ₹2,00,000 are actually the 'budget' way to do it safely and legally.
Will I get vegetarian food on a safari?
Yes! Tanzanian safari operators host thousands of Indians every year. Almost every lodge and camp will happily whip up decent vegetarian curries, rice, dal, and grilled veggies if you inform them in advance. Don't expect a Michelin-star paneer tikka, but you won't starve.
Is it safe to sleep in canvas tents in the wild?
Yes, but follow the rules. There are no fences. Hyenas and lions will walk through your camp at night. Do not keep food in your tent, zip your tent completely, and never walk alone in the dark—always use the Maasai guards to escort you to the dining tent.
What's the best way to fly there from India?
You have two main choices: Fly to Kilimanjaro (JRO) via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) or fly to Nairobi (NBO) via Kenya Airways/IndiGo. Nairobi is often cheaper from Mumbai/Delhi, but you'll need to take a 6-hour shuttle bus across the border to Arusha and pay for a Kenyan transit visa.
How much should we tip the safari guide?
Tipping is a huge part of the safari economy. The standard is $10 to $15 USD per person, per day for your driver/guide. Pool the money with your group and hand it to them in an envelope at the end of the trip. Use crisp, new USD bills.
Can I wear camouflage clothing?
No. Camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in many African countries, including Tanzania. Stick to neutral colors like khaki, olive green, and beige.
Are the Tsetse flies really that bad?
In certain areas like the woodlands and the Western Corridor, yes. They bite through thin clothing and DEET doesn't repel them well. The best defense is rolling up the windows when driving through swarms and avoiding black or dark blue clothes, which attract them.

Group Trips to Serengeti

Planning a Serengeti group tour from India is a bucket-list dream for many young travelers and adventure seekers. Located in the Mara Region of Tanzania, the Serengeti district offers an unparalleled wildlife experience, famous globally for the Great Migration. If you are looking for group trips to Serengeti, expect prices to start around ₹2,05,000. This covers the massive park fees, specialized 4x4 safari vehicles, and tented accommodations. Going with a group is highly recommended because it significantly cuts down the per-person cost of vehicle hire and guides. For Indian travelers, the easiest route is flying from Mumbai or Delhi to Nairobi or Kilimanjaro, then starting the overland journey from Arusha. While the Serengeti is a year-round destination, timing your Serengeti safari depends on what you want to see. Visit in February for the dramatic calving season in the south, or book between July and September to witness the intense river crossings in the north. A group travel package to Tanzania takes the headache out of navigating border crossings, permits, and off-road driving. Just pack your binoculars, neutral-colored clothes, and a good camera, and get ready for the most raw, dusty, and spectacular adventure of your life.
