What to Expect

Expect a mix of everything: café culture at the base in Kasol, traditional Himachali wooden architecture in Grahan, steep forest ascents, and massive snowfields at the top. You'll be sleeping in tents, using dry pit toilets, and eating basic but hot vegetarian food. The trail gets very crowded in peak summer, so expect to share campsites with dozens of other trekkers. You will lose cell phone network entirely after day one.

Honest Heads-Up
  • It is marketed as a 'beginner' trek, but the summit day is incredibly steep and exhausting. Do not show up straight off the couch.
  • May is peak season and the trail feels like a crowded highway. If you want solitude, this isn't the trek for you.
  • Sports shoes or sneakers will get you injured or frostbitten in the snow. Proper trekking shoes with ankle support are mandatory.
  • Toilets are dry pit tents (a hole in the ground). Mentally prepare for this.
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk. Drink at least 4 liters of water daily.

How to Reach

Take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh to Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, take a local HRTC bus or a shared taxi to Kasol (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Kasol is the base camp for the Sar Pass trek.

Travel Tips
1Trim your toenails before the trek. Long toenails will hit the front of your shoe during the steep descent and turn black/fall off.
2Keep your phone and power bank inside your sleeping bag at night. Cold batteries drain 50% faster.
3Layering is key. Don't wear one massive jacket while walking; you will sweat, freeze, and fall sick. Wear a dry-fit tee, fleece, and add a windcheater if needed.
4Hydration is your best defense against AMS. Force yourself to drink water even if you aren't thirsty.
5Rent trekking poles. They save your knees by taking 20% of the load off your legs during descents.

Eat all the meals provided by the trek leader, even if you lose your appetite at high altitude. You need the calories to survive the summit push.

FAQs

Is Sar Pass good for beginners?
Yes, but 'beginner' in the Himalayas doesn't mean easy. You need a good baseline of fitness to handle the 13,800 ft altitude and steep summit climb. If you can jog 5km in 35 minutes, you're good to go.
Can I do this trek in sports shoes?
Absolutely not. You will be walking on deep snow and ice. Trekking shoes with high ankle support and deep lugs are mandatory. You can rent them in Kasol.
Will I get mobile network on the trail?
You will have Jio/Airtel in Kasol. BSNL works sporadically up to Grahan village (Day 1). After that, you are completely cut off until you descend.
How are the washrooms on the trek?
You will use dry pit toilets. These are small tents with a hole dug into the ground. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. No running water is available.
What is the famous snow slide?
During descent from the Sar Pass summit, there is a steep, safe snow slope where trekkers literally slide down on their backs for about 100 feet. It saves time and is incredibly fun.
Can we drink alcohol or smoke during the trek?
Strictly no. Alcohol and smoking at high altitudes mask the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and severely dehydrate you. Trek leaders will confiscate alcohol.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, joining a group tour (like the ₹7,500 packages) is extremely safe. You'll be with 15-20 other trekkers and professional guides.
Can I leave my extra luggage at the base camp?
Yes, most trek operators in Kasol provide a cloakroom facility where you can leave your main backpack/trolley bag and only carry your 50-60L trekking rucksack.
