What to Expect

Expect a forced but welcome digital detox. There are no fancy resorts, just honest homestays, eco-camps, and forest rest houses. The vibe is incredibly slow. Your daily itinerary will mostly involve walking along the riverbed, spotting wildlife, eating farm-to-table Pahadi food, and talking to your group instead of staring at screens.

How to Reach

Take a train (like the Mussoorie Express) or bus from Delhi to Kotdwar (approx 5 hours). From Kotdwar, hire a shared or private taxi to Rathuwadhab (approx 2.5 hours) via the scenic forest route. Alternatively, drive via Ramnagar (Corbett), which takes about 3 hours from the Ramnagar barrage.

Travel Tips
1Download offline maps on Google Maps before crossing Kotdwar or Ramnagar.
2Bring all your snacks, cigarettes, and specific toiletries from the city; the village shops only sell very basic items.
3Carry a good quality torch; the village gets pitch dark at night and power cuts are common.
4Book your Sonanadi safari well in advance, especially if traveling in April or May.
5Do not wander near the river alone at dusk or dawn; wildlife movement is frequent.

FAQs

Will my Jio/Airtel SIM work in Rathuwadhab?
No. Airtel and Jio are virtually dead here. BSNL might give you a single bar of 2G if you stand on a specific rock, but don't count on it. Tell your family you'll be unreachable.
Is it safe for a group of girls?
Yes, absolutely. The locals are incredibly respectful and protective of guests. However, because it's a wildlife corridor, do not venture out of your property after dark without a local guide.
Can we do a tiger safari from here?
Yes! Rathuwadhab is close to the Vatanvasa gate of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (part of the Corbett Tiger Reserve). You can book safaris here, and it's way less crowded than the Ramnagar gates.
Can we buy alcohol locally?
No. There are no liquor shops in Rathuwadhab. If you want to drink, you need to BYOB from Kotdwar or Ramnagar. And please, do not leave glass bottles in the river.
Is there an ATM in the village?
No. The nearest reliable ATMs are in Kotdwar or Ramnagar, which are 2-3 hours away. Carry all the cash you will need for your entire trip.
Can we play loud music at night?
Absolutely not. You are in an eco-sensitive buffer zone. Loud music disturbs the wildlife and the locals. If you want a DJ night, go to Rishikesh.
How do we reach Rathuwadhab from Delhi?
The easiest way is to take the Mussoorie Express or Shatabdi to Kotdwar, and then hire a local taxi to Rathuwadhab (approx 2.5 hours). You can also drive via Ramnagar, but the Kotdwar route is more scenic.
Are there leeches?
During the monsoon (July-August) and slightly post-monsoon, yes. If you hike in the damp forest, wear leech socks and carry salt.
