How to Reach

Guwahati (GAU) in Assam is the primary gateway to the North East, offering the best flight connectivity. From Guwahati, you can drive to Meghalaya or Arunachal. For Sikkim, fly into Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal. Dimapur has an airport and railway station for accessing Nagaland. Trains to Guwahati are well connected from major Indian cities, but flights save crucial time.

FAQs

Is North East India safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, it is one of the safest regions in India for women. Many states, like Meghalaya, have matriarchal societies. Locals are respectful and helpful. Just avoid traveling on remote highways late at night.
Do Indians need a passport or visa to visit?
No passport or visa is needed for Indian citizens, but you do need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur. Sikkim requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for certain areas.
Is vegetarian food easily available?
Yes, basic vegetarian food (dal, rice, mixed veg, momos) is available almost everywhere. However, pure-veg restaurants are rare outside major cities like Guwahati or Gangtok. You might not get a massive variety of veg delicacies.
Is it an expensive destination?
Stays and food are quite affordable, but transportation is expensive. Because of the terrain, you usually have to hire private SUVs like Innovas or Sumos, which can cost INR 3500-5000 per day. Traveling in a group helps split this cost.
Will my Jio or Airtel SIM work there?
Jio and Airtel work perfectly in major towns and cities. However, in remote areas of Arunachal, Nagaland, or North Sikkim, only BSNL works reliably. It's best to carry a BSNL SIM as a backup.
Can I self-drive?
Only if you have extensive experience driving on treacherous mountain roads, dealing with fog, and navigating slush. Otherwise, it is highly recommended to hire a local driver who knows the terrain.
Why does everything close so early?
Because the region is geographically further east but follows Indian Standard Time (IST). The sun sets by 4:30 PM in winter. Markets close by 7 PM, and getting dinner after 8:30 PM can be a struggle.
Can I cover Meghalaya and Arunachal in a 7-day trip?
Absolutely not. Guwahati to Tawang (Arunachal) itself takes 2 days of driving one way. Stick to one state for a 7-day trip to actually enjoy it rather than living in a car.
