What to Expect
A paved ghat road winds 8km up to a parking lot. From there, a short 10-minute walk takes you to the main sunrise point, Tipu's Drop (a 600m cliff), and the Bhoganandishwara temple at the base. There are monkeys everywhere — they snatch food and sunglasses. Food stalls sell mediocre idli-vada and Maggi. Toilets are basic. On weekdays it's peaceful; on weekends it's a selfie stampede. You can also cycle up (popular with Bangalore cycling groups) or do the 3km trail from the base if the road is closed for vehicles after 6 AM.
- The hill is closed for vehicles from 6 AM to 10 AM on weekends and holidays — you must park at the base and walk 8km up or take a local shuttle (₹50).
- Monkeys are aggressive. Do not carry open food, plastic bags, or shiny objects. They will snatch and bite.
- Sunrise is only spectacular from October to February. In summer (March-May), it's hazy and hot by 8 AM.
- There's no proper restaurant at the top — only snacks. Eat breakfast in Devanahalli or bring your own.
- The road has steep, blind curves. If you're driving, use low gear and honk at every bend. Accidents happen.
Things to Do
Plan Your Trip
From Bangalore: 60km via NH44 (Bellary Road). Drive takes 1.5 hours. KSRTC buses from Majestic to Nandi Hills (₹50-70, 2 hours). Or take a cab (₹1,200-1,500 one way). Nearest railway station: Devanahalli (10km). Nearest airport: Kempegowda International (30km). Group tours usually pick up from common points in Bangalore.
Local Guide
Eat breakfast at Nandi Upachar (base) or Devanahalli before going up. The top stalls are overpriced and not hygienic. Carry energy bars and fruit.
