How to Reach
Take a local train on the Central Line to Neral Station. From Neral, take a shared taxi (approx ₹100 per seat) to Dasturi Naka, which takes 30 mins. Alternatively, take the Toy Train from Neral directly to Matheran (if operating). From Dasturi Naka, no vehicles are allowed; you must walk 3km along the tracks, or hire a horse/rickshaw to the main town.
FAQs
Can I drive my car all the way up to my hotel?
Absolutely not. Matheran is an eco-sensitive, vehicle-free zone. You must park your car at Dasturi Naka and walk, take a horse, or use a hand-pulled rickshaw for the remaining 3km.
Is the toy train running right now?
The Neral-Matheran toy train operates most of the year but is strictly suspended during the monsoon (June to October) for safety. A shorter shuttle runs between Aman Lodge and Matheran station year-round.
Are horses the only way to get around?
No. Walking is the best and most ethical way to explore Matheran. If you have severe mobility issues, hand-pulled rickshaws are available, though they are expensive.
Is it safe for a girls' trip?
Yes, Matheran is very safe. The locals rely heavily on tourism and are generally helpful. However, the forest trails get pitch dark after sunset, so head back to the main market area before dark.
Is alcohol allowed in Matheran?
Yes, but carrying open bottles on the trails is a bad idea due to monkeys and police checks at the entry point. There are limited wine shops, so it's best to BYOB and drink discreetly at your private stay.
How much walking is actually involved?
If you want to cover the major viewpoints (Louisa, Echo, Panorama), expect to walk 10-15 km in a day. The paths are uneven, so it feels like a light trek.
Do I need to pre-book hotels?
On weekends, long weekends, and winter months, yes. Budget and mid-range places sell out fast, leaving only overpriced, subpar rooms for walk-ins.
What happens if a monkey attacks me?
Monkeys don't attack unprovoked; they mug you for food. Drop whatever food or plastic bag you are holding and walk away. Do not try to fight them for a packet of chips.
