Honest Heads-Up
  • Do not fly into Leh and head to Khardung La the next day. You will get sick. Mandatory 48-hour acclimatization is non-negotiable.
  • Outside rented bikes (from Manali/Delhi) cannot be used for local sightseeing in Leh (Pangong/Nubra). You must rent a local Leh union bike.
  • Leave your party plans at home. Alcohol worsens AMS, and Leh shuts down early. This is not Kasol or Goa.
  • Only postpaid BSNL, Jio, and Airtel connections work here. Prepaid SIMs from outside Ladakh will become dead plastic.
  • Toilets at remote camps (Pangong/Tso Moriri) are often dry compost pits. Mentally prepare for it.

How to Reach

Fly directly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh (prepare for immediate altitude hit). Alternatively, take a road trip via the Manali-Leh Highway (opens June) or the Srinagar-Leh Highway (opens May). Road trips help better with acclimatization.

Travel Tips
1Do not sleep during the daytime on the day you arrive. Stay awake until night to help your body adjust to the altitude.
2Camphor (kapur) does not cure AMS. Don't rely on myths; rely on rest and hydration.
3Layer your clothing. The sun will burn you at 1 PM, and the wind will freeze you at 5 PM.
4Book shared taxis from the Leh taxi stand a day in advance to save massive amounts of money on trips to Pangong and Nubra.

FAQs

Do I really need to take Diamox?
Diamox helps prevent AMS, but it's a sulfa drug and not for everyone. Consult your doctor before your trip. The best medicine is 48 hours of strict rest upon arrival and staying hydrated.
Can I bring my own bike or a rented bike from Delhi/Manali to Pangong?
You can ride it to Leh city. However, the local Leh taxi/bike union does not allow outside rented commercial vehicles to go to Pangong, Nubra, or Tso Moriri. You will have to rent a local bike in Leh for those legs.
Will my prepaid Jio/Airtel SIM work?
No. Only postpaid connections (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in J&K and Ladakh due to security regulations. BSNL has the widest reach in remote areas, while Jio works great in Leh city.
Is Leh safe for solo female travelers?
Extremely safe. The crime rate against tourists is virtually zero, and locals are incredibly respectful and helpful. The main dangers are altitude and weather, not people.
Can I drink alcohol to stay warm?
Absolutely not. Alcohol causes dehydration and depresses your breathing rate, which is a lethal combination at high altitudes and significantly increases the risk of severe AMS.
How much cash should I carry?
UPI works in Leh city, but networks fail at Pangong, Nubra, and on the highways. Carry at least ₹5,000-₹10,000 in cash for dhabas, permits, and emergencies.
Do hotels in Leh have AC?
Almost none do, because you won't need it. Even in peak summer, nights are cool. You'll be looking for room heaters, not ACs.
What is the toilet situation like?
Leh city has modern flush toilets. However, on road trips and at eco-camps in Pangong/Tso Moriri, expect dry compost toilets. Bring your own toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a strong stomach.
