FAQs
How do I get a permit for Lakshadweep?
It's a process. You need a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from your local police station first. Then, you apply via the ePermit portal with an island sponsor, or book a package through SPORTS (the govt tourism body) or an authorized agent who handles it for you.
Is alcohol allowed in Lakshadweep?
No. Lakshadweep is a dry state. The ONLY exception is Bangaram Island, which is uninhabited and has a resort where alcohol is served. Do not try to smuggle liquor in your luggage; bags are scanned.
Can I do a cheap backpacking trip here?
Honestly, no. Flight tickets from Kochi are expensive, and homestays/resorts have fixed government-regulated pricing. You can't just pitch a tent. Expect to spend at least 8k-10k per day including transit.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Extremely safe. The crime rate is practically zero. However, it's a conservative Muslim region, so dressing modestly (covering shoulders and knees) on inhabited islands like Agatti and Kavaratti is expected. Bikinis are fine on uninhabited islands like Bangaram and Thinnakara.
Andaman vs Lakshadweep: Which is better?
Andaman has better infrastructure, roads, cafes, and nightlife (Havelock). Lakshadweep is purely for raw, untouched beaches, exclusivity, and arguably better, more vibrant coral reefs. Go to Andaman for a vacation; go to Lakshadweep for isolation.
Which island should I choose?
Agatti is your transit hub (has the airstrip). Kadmat is best for scuba diving. Bangaram is best for luxury and relaxation (and drinks). Minicoy has a unique Maldivian culture and a great lighthouse.
Will my phone work?
Only if you have BSNL. BSNL provides decent 2G/3G for calls and basic WhatsApp. Airtel works in patches on some islands. Jio and Vodafone will show 'No Service' the moment you land.
How is the vegetarian food?
Manageable but boring. Locals mostly eat tuna and coconut-based dishes. As a veg traveler, you'll get dal, rice, paneer (sometimes), and local vegetables. Bring some dry snacks or ready-to-eat meals if you are a fussy eater.
