What to Expect

Expect to be humbled by nature. You'll experience extreme temperature swings (roasting in the sun, freezing in the shade), long and exhausting car rides on unpaved mountain roads, dry pit toilets at campsites, and the very real possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). But you'll also get crystal-clear night skies, surreal blue lakes, and a profound sense of achievement.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is no joke. Do not act like a hero; take 48 hours to acclimatize in Leh.
  • Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not work here. You need a BSNL or Jio postpaid connection.
  • Toilets outside Leh town (especially at Pangong and Nubra camps) are often basic dry pits. Lower your standards.
  • The sun will roast you. The UV index at this altitude is brutal; SPF 50+ is mandatory, not optional.
  • Google Maps travel times are a lie. A 100km drive can easily take 4-5 hours depending on road conditions and water crossings.

Plan Your Trip

How to Reach

You can fly directly into Leh (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport) year-round, but you must rest for 48 hours upon arrival. Alternatively, take the epic road trip via the Manali-Leh highway or the Srinagar-Leh highway (both generally open from June to September).

Travel Tips
1Acclimatize for at least 2 full days in Leh before heading to higher altitudes like Nubra or Pangong.
2Drink 3-4 liters of water daily to help your body adjust to the altitude, but don't over-hydrate to the point of sickness.
3Sunscreen is not optional. Apply SPF 50+ every 3 hours; the UV index will roast your skin.
4Pack in layers. You can be sweating in a t-shirt at noon and shivering in a down jacket by 5 PM.
5Keep a buffer day in your itinerary. Landslides, road closures, or AMS can easily derail a tight schedule.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Must try: Thukpa (Noodle soup), Momos, Skyu (Traditional pasta stew), Butter Tea / Gur Gur Chai, Apricot Jam and Juice, Khambir (Local bread)

Eat light, carb-heavy meals. Digestion slows down significantly at high altitudes, so heavy, oily meats can make you feel lethargic and nauseous.

Culture & Etiquette
  • Always walk clockwise around Stupas, Mani walls, and prayer wheels.
  • Do not touch monks or sacred artifacts in monasteries.
  • Dress modestly. Despite the harsh sun, avoid short shorts and tank tops, especially when visiting monasteries.
  • Always ask for permission before photographing local Ladakhi people.

FAQs

Is it safe to fly directly to Leh?
Yes, but you will experience a sudden drop in oxygen. You MUST rest completely for the first 48 hours in Leh without doing any physical activity to acclimatize and avoid AMS.
Can I take my automatic hatchback or sedan to Ladakh?
You can, but you shouldn't. The water crossings and broken roads (especially towards Pangong and Hanle) will destroy the underbelly of low-ground-clearance cars. Rent an SUV.
Will my phone work in Ladakh?
Only postpaid connections work in J&K and Ladakh. Jio and BSNL have the best coverage. Airtel works decently in Leh town but drops off elsewhere.
Is Diamox necessary?
It is highly recommended as a preventive measure for AMS, but you must consult your doctor before starting a course, as it has side effects like tingling fingers and frequent urination.
How much cash should I carry?
UPI works flawlessly in Leh town, but once you head to Nubra, Pangong, or Hanle, network drops mean UPI won't work. Carry at least ₹5,000-₹10,000 in cash per person for the inner circuits.
Can asthmatics go to Ladakh?
It is risky. The oxygen levels are about 40% lower than at sea level. You absolutely must get clearance from your pulmonologist before booking a trip.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Ladakh is one of the safest regions in India for women. The locals are deeply respectful and crime against tourists is virtually unheard of. Joining a group tour is a great way to cut costs on cabs.
Can we drink alcohol in Ladakh?
Drinking at high altitudes is a terrible idea. It dehydrates you and mimics/masks the symptoms of AMS. Save the Old Monk for your last night in Leh town, do not drink at Pangong or Nubra.
