How to Reach

Reach Dharamshala via overnight Volvo bus from Delhi/Chandigarh, or fly into Gaggal Airport. From Dharamshala, hire a local taxi to Kareri Village (approx 27 km, takes 1.5 hours, costs around INR 1200-1500). The trek starts from the village.

Is Kareri Lake trek safe for beginners?

It's a moderate trek. Beginners with decent cardio fitness can do it, but the boulder-hopping in the last 2 kms is tough on the knees. If you've never hiked before, try Triund first.

Can I do the trek without a guide?

Yes, the trail is fairly well-marked and follows the river. However, hiring a local guide from Kareri Village helps the local economy and ensures you don't get lost if weather turns bad.

Are there washrooms at the lake?

No permanent structures. If you book through a trek operator, they will set up a dry pit toilet tent. Otherwise, it's out in nature. Carry a trowel and bury your waste.

Is there mobile network on the trail?

Jio and Airtel work decently until Kareri Village. Once you start the trek, you will lose network completely. Inform your family before starting.

Where do we get drinking water?

The trail runs along the Nyund stream. The water is generally clean, but carry a filtered water bottle (like Lifestraw) or purification tablets to be safe. Do not buy plastic water bottles at the base.

How long does the trek take?

It takes about 5-7 hours to ascend the 9 km from Kareri Village to the lake, depending on your fitness. The descent takes about 4-5 hours.

Can we camp anywhere?

There are designated camping spots near the lake. Don't pitch your tent too close to the water body to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Are there food stalls on the way?

Yes, there are a few local shacks (dhabbas) selling Maggi, omelets, tea, and basic dal-chawal along the trail and near the lake during peak season. They close down in heavy winter.
