How to Reach

Take a Mumbai local train to Kalyan on the Central Line. From Kalyan ST depot, catch a state transport (ST) bus to Murbad. From Murbad, take another ST bus or a shared jeep/tum-tum to Dehri village, which is the base of the trek. If driving, navigate to Dehri village via the Kalyan-Murbad road.

FAQs

Is Gorakhgad suitable for beginners?
No. The final rock-cut steps are almost 80 degrees steep. You need good upper body strength, lack of vertigo, and some prior trekking experience in the Sahyadris.
Can we stay overnight in the caves?
Yes, the main cave can accommodate 15-20 people. It's a popular spot for night stays. However, there are no doors, so beware of monkeys and wind.
Are there washrooms at the top?
Absolutely not. You will have to go in the open. The base village (Dehri) has basic pay-and-use toilets built by villagers.
Is it safe to trek Gorakhgad in the monsoon?
It's highly risky. The rock-cut stairs become extremely slippery. Only attempt it in the monsoon if you are an experienced trekker with shoes that have excellent grip.
Do we need ropes to climb the pinnacle?
Ropes aren't strictly necessary as the rock-cut stairs have deep grooves for your hands and feet. However, carrying a climbing rope is a good safety backup for the final patch.
Is food available on the fort?
No. You must carry all your own food. You can pre-order a local meal (Pithla Bhakri) at a villager's house in Dehri for when you return.
Is there mobile network on the fort?
Network is very patchy. Jio and Airtel might give you 1-2 bars at the pinnacle, but expect to be mostly disconnected.
How long does the trek take?
It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the top from Dehri village, and about 1.5 to 2 hours to descend.
