How to Reach
Fly into Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar) or take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi/Chandigarh to Manali. From Manali, hire a taxi, rent a bike, or take an HRTC bus through the Atal Tunnel to reach Sissu (1 hour) or Keylong (2 hours).
FAQs
Do I need a permit to visit Lahaul Valley?
Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Lahaul via the Atal Tunnel. However, if you plan to go via Rohtang Pass, you need a Rohtang Pass permit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) if they are continuing towards Spiti.
Will my sedan or hatchback survive the roads?
Up to Keylong and Jispa, yes, easily. The roads are mostly tarmac now. If you plan to go offbeat into Miyar Valley or towards Shinku La, high ground clearance (SUV) is highly recommended.
How bad is the altitude sickness (AMS)?
Sissu is at 10,200 ft and Keylong at 10,000 ft. You will feel shortness of breath. Spend a day acclimatizing in Manali (6,500 ft) before crossing over. Drink plenty of water and don't exert yourself on day one.
Is there mobile network in Lahaul?
Jio and BSNL work best and have 4G in Sissu, Keylong, and Jispa. Airtel is very patchy and basically dies once you cross Sissu.
Can we do a party trip here?
Honestly, no. Lahaul is a fragile, high-altitude eco-sensitive zone with deep Buddhist roots. Locals hate loud music and public drinking. Keep the party in Kasol or Manali.
Are there ATMs available?
Yes, there are a couple of SBI and PNB ATMs in Keylong, but they frequently run out of cash. Carry enough hard cash from Manali.
Can I do Spiti and Lahaul in one trip?
Yes, but only between June and September when the Kunzum Pass is open. It connects Lahaul to Spiti. Outside these months, the pass is buried in snow.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Extremely safe. The locals are respectful and crime rates are practically zero. Just be cautious about the remote terrain and lack of network.
