Honest Heads-Up
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is real. Do not skip the mandatory 24-hour acclimatization rest on Day 1. You are not invincible.
  • Outside commercial/rental cars (like Zoomcar or Delhi-registered taxis) are not allowed for local sightseeing to Pangong or Nubra. You must hire local Leh taxis.
  • Only postpaid connections (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in Ladakh. Prepaid SIMs become dead plastic the moment you land.
  • Roads to Pangong and Tso Moriri lack proper medical facilities and have dry pit toilets. Pack hand sanitizer and lower your luxury expectations.

How to Reach

By Air: Fly directly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh (highest AMS risk, requires 24hr rest). By Road: Drive or ride via the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1) or the Manali-Leh Highway (scenic but tougher, opens late May).

Travel Tips
1Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily.
2Do not overexert yourself at high passes like Khardung La. Spend a maximum of 15-20 minutes at the top.
3Pack in layers. The sun is scorching, but the wind is freezing.
4Don't rely on Google Maps travel times. A 100km drive in Ladakh can easily take 4-5 hours.
5Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer; public restrooms on the highways are basic dry pits.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Must try: Thukpa (noodle soup), Momos (steamed dumplings), Skyu (traditional pasta stew), Butter Tea (salty and acquired taste), Khambir (local pan-shaped bread)

Leh market has incredible cafes serving Italian, Israeli, and Continental food. Outside Leh, expect basic dhabas serving Maggi, dal chawal, and momos.

Culture & Etiquette
  • Always walk clockwise around stupas and Mani walls.
  • Dress modestly when visiting monasteries; avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.
  • Do not touch or disturb monks during prayer or meditation.
  • Learn the local greeting 'Julley' (pronounced Joo-lay)—it means hello, goodbye, please, and thank you, and it opens many doors.

FAQs

Do I really need to rest on Day 1?
Absolutely. If you fly into Leh, you jump from near sea level to 11,500 ft in an hour. Skip the rest, and you'll likely spend Day 2 in a clinic on oxygen. Sleep, hydrate, and take it easy.
Can I take my own car or a Zoomcar to Pangong?
You can drive your private car (white board) anywhere. However, self-drive rentals (black board/yellow numbers) or outside commercial taxis are banned from doing local sightseeing (Nubra, Pangong). You must hire a local Leh taxi.
Which SIM card works in Ladakh?
Only postpaid SIMs from outside J&K/Ladakh work here. Jio and Airtel postpaid work well in Leh city and Nubra. BSNL postpaid is best for remote areas like Pangong. Prepaid SIMs will not work at all.
Should I take Diamox before traveling?
Many doctors recommend starting a half dose of Diamox 24 hours before your flight to help acclimatize. However, it's a sulfa drug, so consult your physician first. It makes you pee a lot and causes tingling in your fingers, which is normal.
Are there ATMs outside Leh?
Hardly any. Leh market has plenty of ATMs (SBI, HDFC, Axis), but once you leave for Nubra or Pangong, cash is king. UPI works in Leh but fails in remote areas due to zero network. Carry enough cash.
Is it safe to ride a bike if I'm a beginner?
No. The roads to Khardung La and Chang La have black ice, slush, deep water crossings, and chaotic traffic. If you haven't ridden a heavy bike in the mountains before, stick to an SUV.
Can we drink alcohol on the trip?
Avoid alcohol for at least the first 48 hours. It dehydrates you and masks the symptoms of AMS, which is a deadly combination at high altitudes. Save the Old Monk for the last night in Leh.
How cold does it get at Pangong Lake?
Even in peak summer (June/July), night temperatures at Pangong drop to 0°C to 5°C. The wind chill makes it feel much colder. Always pack a heavy jacket and thermals.
