What to Expect

Expect jaw-dropping scenery wrapped in heavy security. You'll spend a lot of time in cars navigating winding mountain roads. The locals are incredibly hospitable (the famous 'Kashmiriyat'), but the tourist-trap touts around Dal Lake and Gulmarg can be relentless. Weather changes fast, so layering is a daily necessity.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Prepaid SIM cards from outside J&K DO NOT work here. You must have a postpaid connection (Jio and Airtel work best) or buy a local prepaid SIM upon arrival.
  • The 'pony mafia' in Gulmarg and Pahalgam is notorious. They will aggressively push rides. Be firm if you prefer to walk.
  • Security checks are frequent. Always carry your original Aadhar/Voter ID and keep it handy.
  • Don't buy saffron or pashmina from street vendors or random guides; 90% of the time, it's fake.
  • Srinagar airport security is intense. Arrive at least 3 hours before your departure flight. There are multiple baggage screening checkpoints before you even enter the terminal.

How to Reach

Flying into Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) in Srinagar is the most practical and comfortable option. Alternatively, you can take a train to Jammu Tawi or Katra, followed by an 8-10 hour shared cab or bus ride to Srinagar, but this road is prone to massive traffic jams and closures.

Travel Tips
1Book your Gulmarg Gondola tickets online at least 1-2 months in advance. They sell out incredibly fast.
2In Pahalgam, outside taxis are not allowed for local sightseeing (Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari). You must hire a local union taxi, so budget an extra ₹2500-₹3000 for this.
3Haggle hard for Shikara rides and pony rides. The initial quoted price is often 2x or 3x the actual rate.
4If traveling in winter, ensure your hotel has central heating or guaranteed electric blankets. Power cuts are common, so ask if they have a strong generator backup.
5Keep your itinerary flexible. Weather or sudden security VIP movements can unexpectedly close roads or attractions.

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Must try: Wazwan (a multi-course meat feast, usually shared), Rogan Josh (tender lamb curry), Kahwa (traditional green tea with saffron and almonds), Noon Chai (pink salty tea), Gushtaba and Rista (meatballs in yogurt and red gravy)

For an authentic Wazwan experience without committing to a massive 36-course meal, order a 'Trami' (a platter for 4 people) at popular spots like Ahdoos or Mughal Darbar in Srinagar.

FAQs

Is Kashmir safe for tourists right now?
Yes, standard tourist circuits (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg) are very safe. The heavy military presence might feel intimidating at first, but it ensures tourist safety. Just avoid wandering into border areas or getting involved in local political discussions.
Will my Jio/Airtel SIM work?
Only if it is a POSTPAID connection. Prepaid SIMs from other states are completely blocked in J&K due to security reasons. You can buy a local prepaid SIM at the airport, but it takes a few hours to activate.
Do I need an AC room in June?
In Srinagar, yes, it's highly recommended as daytime temps can cross 30°C. In Gulmarg or Pahalgam, you won't need an AC; a ceiling fan is more than enough.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola worth it and how do I book?
100% worth it, especially Phase 2. However, tickets sell out literally months in advance. You must book online on the official J&K cable car website well before your trip. Do not rely on local touts promising tickets.
Can we drink alcohol in Kashmir?
Kashmir is a Muslim-majority region with very limited alcohol availability. There are a couple of government-authorized shops in Srinagar (like on Boulevard Road), but it's largely frowned upon to drink openly. Bring your own from home and consume it discreetly in your room.
How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?
6 to 7 days is the sweet spot to comfortably cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg without spending your entire vacation inside a moving car.
Is a houseboat stay actually good?
It's a great one-night experience for the vibe, but manage your expectations. They are stationary, can be very cold in winter, and water pressure/electricity can be erratic. Book one night on a houseboat and the rest in regular hotels.
What is the difference between Pahalgam and Sonamarg?
Pahalgam is a lush, expansive valley with rivers, pine forests, and meadows (great for relaxing). Sonamarg is more rugged, high-altitude, and glacier-focused (great for adventure and raw mountain views).
