What to Expect
Expect jaw-dropping scenery wrapped in heavy security. You'll spend a lot of time in cars navigating winding mountain roads. The locals are incredibly hospitable (the famous 'Kashmiriyat'), but the tourist-trap touts around Dal Lake and Gulmarg can be relentless. Weather changes fast, so layering is a daily necessity.
- Prepaid SIM cards from outside J&K DO NOT work here. You must have a postpaid connection (Jio and Airtel work best) or buy a local prepaid SIM upon arrival.
- The 'pony mafia' in Gulmarg and Pahalgam is notorious. They will aggressively push rides. Be firm if you prefer to walk.
- Security checks are frequent. Always carry your original Aadhar/Voter ID and keep it handy.
- Don't buy saffron or pashmina from street vendors or random guides; 90% of the time, it's fake.
- Srinagar airport security is intense. Arrive at least 3 hours before your departure flight. There are multiple baggage screening checkpoints before you even enter the terminal.
Things to Do
Plan Your Trip
Flying into Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) in Srinagar is the most practical and comfortable option. Alternatively, you can take a train to Jammu Tawi or Katra, followed by an 8-10 hour shared cab or bus ride to Srinagar, but this road is prone to massive traffic jams and closures.
Local Guide
Must try: Wazwan (a multi-course meat feast, usually shared), Rogan Josh (tender lamb curry), Kahwa (traditional green tea with saffron and almonds), Noon Chai (pink salty tea), Gushtaba and Rista (meatballs in yogurt and red gravy)
For an authentic Wazwan experience without committing to a massive 36-course meal, order a 'Trami' (a platter for 4 people) at popular spots like Ahdoos or Mughal Darbar in Srinagar.
