Honest Heads-Up
  • Do NOT touch the temples, houses, or locals. The fine is ₹3,500+ and they are absolutely serious about it.
  • Cannabis (Malana Cream) is illegal in India. Despite the village's reputation, police checkposts at Jari and Bhuntar are strict and thorough. Do not risk carrying anything back.
  • The road from Jari to Malana Gate is terrifyingly narrow and prone to landslides. Hire a local taxi instead of driving your own car.
  • Do not photograph locals, especially women and children, without explicit permission.
  • There are no ATMs and network connectivity is almost non-existent. Carry all the cash you need.

How to Reach

Take a Volvo bus from Delhi/Chandigarh to Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, take a local bus or shared taxi to Jari. From Jari, hire a private local taxi to Malana Gate (approx ₹1000-₹1500). From Malana Gate, it is a 1.5 to 2-hour steep trek on foot to the village.

Travel Tips
1Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the harsh afternoon sun and to ensure you can trek back down before dark.
2Pack extremely light. Leave your heavy rucksack at your hotel in Kasol or Jari and only carry a daypack.
3Do not argue with the locals about their rules. You are a guest in their territory.
4Use the washroom at the cafes near the taxi stand before starting the trek; facilities up top are scarce and basic.

Local Guide

Food & DiningVeg Friendly

Eat at the cafes near the Malana Gate or the outskirts. The food is basic survival fuel for the trek, not a culinary experience. Lower your expectations and enjoy the view.

Culture & Etiquette
  • The village operates on its own ancient legal system led by a council of elders.
  • Do not touch the Jamlu Devta temple. Even stepping on the platform will result in a heavy fine.
  • Walk only on the designated stone paths. Do not wander into private courtyards.
  • Leather items (belts, shoes, jackets) are sometimes frowned upon near sacred spaces; be prepared to keep your distance.

FAQs

Is weed legal in Malana?
No. Despite its global reputation, cannabis is entirely illegal in India. Police actively check vehicles and bags at the Jari checkpost. Do not risk your freedom for a souvenir.
Can we book a hotel or homestay inside Malana village?
No, outsiders are strictly prohibited from staying overnight inside the village limits. You must book a campsite or guesthouse on the outskirts, or trek further to Magic Valley/Waichin for stays.
How long and difficult is the trek to Malana?
From the Malana Gate (taxi drop point), it's a steep 1.5 to 2-hour uphill trek. It involves a lot of stairs and rocky paths. It requires moderate fitness.
Why can't we touch anything in the village?
The locals follow a strict caste system and consider themselves superior (some claim descent from Alexander the Great). They view outsiders as 'untouchables'. Touching their temples, houses, or even brushing past them incurs a strict fine of ₹3,500 or more.
Are there ATMs or mobile network in Malana?
There are no ATMs. Network is highly unreliable; Jio and BSNL might work in patches, but don't count on it. Always carry enough cash from Kasol or Bhuntar.
Can I drive my own car to Malana?
You can drive up to Malana Gate, but the road from Jari is extremely narrow, steep, and lacks safety barriers. Parking is very limited. It is highly recommended to hire a local taxi.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, the locals generally keep to themselves and crime against tourists is rare. However, the trail gets isolated, so it's best to hike during daylight hours and choose a well-reviewed campsite outside the village.
Are there cafes inside the village?
There are a few basic cafes and Maggi points on the outskirts and just outside the village boundaries, but do not expect the vibrant, music-filled cafe culture you see in Kasol.

Group Trips to Malana Village

If you are planning group trips to Malana Village, get ready for an adventure that goes beyond the usual Himachal Pradesh itineraries. Nestled deep in the Parvati Valley, this ancient village is a magnet for culture enthusiasts, trekkers, and those looking to disconnect. Booking a Malana group tour starting at just ₹3,200 is an excellent way to safely navigate the steep trails and strict local customs. Unlike a casual weekend in Kasol, a trip to Malana requires physical effort—a steep two-hour trek from the Malana Gate taxi drop point. But the reward is immense. You will witness traditional Kath-Kuni wooden architecture, breathtaking Himalayan views, and a society that claims to be the world's oldest democracy. When organizing group travel to Malana, it is crucial to educate your squad about the rules: no touching the locals, their houses, or their sacred temples, as fines are strictly enforced. While the village is famous worldwide for its hashish, smart travelers know that police checkposts at Jari are rigorous, so keep your trip clean and focus on the raw beauty of the region. Combine your Malana trek with nearby destinations like the Magic Valley, Waichin, or a relaxing dip in the Manikaran hot springs. Whether you are a group of adventure seekers tackling the trails or photographers capturing the unique culture, Malana offers an unforgettable, offbeat Himalayan experience. Just remember to pack good trekking shoes, carry enough cash, and leave your city ego at the base.
