FAQs
Do I need an ILP to visit Dong Valley?
Yes, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for all Indian citizens entering Arunachal Pradesh. You can apply online or get it at the border check posts, but doing it online in advance saves a lot of hassle.
How difficult is the Dong Valley sunrise trek?
It is a moderate to difficult trek. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours of steep climbing. Doing it at 3 AM in pitch darkness with dropping temperatures makes it physically demanding.
Is there any mobile network in Dong or Walong?
Virtually none. Airtel and Jio do not work. BSNL has a tower in Walong, but it is highly unreliable. Inform your family before you leave Tezu.
What time is the sunrise in Dong Valley?
Depending on the month, the first light hits between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM. You must start your trek from the base by 2:30 AM to make it to the top in time.
Can we drive all the way to the sunrise point?
No. You can drive up to the suspension bridge over the Lohit River. From there, you have to cross the bridge on foot and trek up the mountain.
Are there ATMs in Walong or Dong?
No. The last reliable ATMs are in Tezu or Tinsukia (Assam). Carry enough cash to cover homestays, food, and emergency fuel.
Is it safe for solo female travelers?
Arunachal Pradesh is generally very safe for women, and locals are respectful. However, due to the complete lack of network, remote roads, and the 3 AM trek, joining a group is highly recommended for logistical safety.
Where should we stay to do the Dong trek?
Most travelers stay in Walong, which is about 20km from the trek base. There are basic homestays and an Inspection Bungalow (IB). You leave Walong around 1:30 AM for the trek.
