What to Expect

Expect a physically demanding 18km walk (one way) on a well-marked but rocky trail. The altitude gain is significant, meaning you will likely feel breathless. Accommodation at the midway/base point in Bhojbasa is extremely basic (GMVN dorms or ashram tents). You'll experience extreme temperature drops at night, zero mobile connectivity after Gangotri, and the constant, thundering sound of the Bhagirathi river. The final 2km to the glacier snout involves navigating a boulder-strewn moraine.

Honest Heads-Up
  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real threat here. Do not rush the ascent.
  • Permits are strictly capped at 150 per day. If you don't book in advance, you won't get past the forest gate.
  • The glacier is actively calving. Do not go too close to the snout; falling ice and rocks are lethal.
  • No meat, no alcohol, no exceptions. This is a highly sacred eco-sensitive zone.
  • The trail after Bhojbasa is prone to rockfalls. Stay alert and follow your guide.

How to Reach

Fly into Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) or take a train to Dehradun/Haridwar. From there, it's a 10-12 hour drive (approx. 240km) via Uttarkashi to Gangotri. The trek to Gaumukh starts on foot from Gangotri.

Travel Tips
1Spend at least one full day in Gangotri (3,415m) before starting the trek to acclimatize.
2Start your trek from Gangotri by 6:00 AM to avoid the harsh afternoon sun and reach Bhojbasa before the wind picks up.
3Do not push through headaches or nausea. If you show signs of AMS, descend immediately.
4Carry enough cash from Uttarkashi. There are no ATMs in Gangotri or beyond.
5Pack out all your trash. The ecosystem here is incredibly fragile.

FAQs

Can I do the Gaumukh trek in one day?
Technically possible for elite athletes, but highly discouraged and practically impossible for normal trekkers. It's 36km round trip at 4000m altitude. You must stay overnight at Bhojbasa.
Do I need a guide for Gaumukh?
While the trail to Bhojbasa is well-marked, a guide is highly recommended, especially for the final 2km over the moraine to the glacier, which changes every year. If you plan to go further to Tapovan, a guide is absolutely mandatory.
How do I get the permit?
Permits are issued by the District Forest Officer (DFO) in Uttarkashi or via the single window system online. Only 150 people are allowed per day. Booking via a group tour usually covers this headache.
Is there mobile network on the trek?
No. You will lose all network (including BSNL and Jio) shortly after leaving Gangotri. Inform your family before you start the trek.
Where do we sleep during the trek?
Most trekkers stay at Bhojbasa (14km from Gangotri). Options include the GMVN guest house (dormitories/tents) or the Lal Baba Ashram. Facilities are extremely basic.
Is the trek safe for beginners?
It is a 'moderate to difficult' trek. While it doesn't require technical climbing skills, the altitude (4000m) and distance make it grueling. You need to be physically fit and properly acclimatized.
Are mules or porters available?
Yes, mules and porters can be hired at Gangotri to carry your backpacks to Bhojbasa. However, mules cannot go all the way to the Gaumukh snout due to the rocky moraine.
Will I see snow?
You will see massive snow-capped peaks (Shivling, Bhagirathi) and the massive ice wall of the glacier. Snow on the trail itself depends on the month; expect trail snow in April/early May, but mostly rocky paths in September/October.

Group Trips to Gaumukh

Looking for an unforgettable adventure in the Garhwal Himalayas? Booking Gaumukh group tours is the smartest way to experience the raw, unfiltered beauty of the Gangotri Glacier without the logistical nightmares of securing high-altitude permits. Gaumukh, the literal snout of the glacier and the birthplace of the holy Bhagirathi River, sits at a breathtaking 4,000 meters. This isn't your average weekend getaway in Uttarakhand; it's a challenging 18-kilometer trek from the Gangotri temple that demands respect, proper acclimatization, and good company. When you opt for a curated group trek starting around ₹16,000, you're not just paying for a guide—you're getting guaranteed Gangotri National Park permits, pre-arranged tents or GMVN dorms at Bhojbasa, and hot vegetarian meals in freezing temperatures. DIY trekking here is tough because the daily permit cap is strictly limited to 150 people, and solo hikers often get turned away at the forest checkpost. Whether you're a spiritual seeker wanting to witness the origins of the Ganges or a hardcore trekking enthusiast planning to push further to the legendary Tapovan meadows, going with a reliable group tour aggregator like TripzSearch ensures your safety is prioritized. The best time to tackle the Gangotri to Gaumukh trek is between May and June or post-monsoon in September and October. Expect zero mobile network, bone-chilling winds, and the humbling sound of shifting ice. Ditch the generic hill stations—pack your heavy woolens, grab your trekking poles, and join a group of like-minded travelers for a Himalayan expedition that will genuinely test your limits and reward you with unparalleled views of the Shivling peak.
