What to Expect

Quiet nights, early mornings, strict traffic rules, spotless streets, and spicy food. Expect lots of walking and hiking (the Tiger's Nest trek is no joke), and a deep, visible respect for the monarchy and religion. Nightlife is minimal outside of a few live music pubs in Thimphu.

How to Reach

You can fly directly into Paro International Airport via Drukair or Bhutan Airlines from Delhi, Kolkata, or Bagdogra. Alternatively, take a flight to Bagdogra (IXB) or a train to Hasimara, and cross the border by road at Phuentsholing (West Bengal border).

Travel Tips
1Leave your Aadhaar card at home; it is entirely useless at Bhutan immigration. Carry your Voter ID or Passport.
2Indian ₹500 notes work everywhere, but do not bring ₹2000 notes.
3Do not rely on UPI. While some places are adopting it, cash is still king in Bhutan.
4Tuesdays are dry days. Buy your alcohol on Monday if you plan to drink.
5Honking is considered extremely rude in Bhutan. If you are driving, keep your hand off the horn.
6Always carry a warm layer, even in summer. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains.

FAQs

Do Indians need a passport or visa for Bhutan?
You don't need a visa, but you need an Entry Permit. To get it, you must carry either a valid Indian Passport (minimum 6 months validity) or an original Voter ID. Aadhaar cards are NOT accepted.
What is the SDF for Indians?
Indian tourists must pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1,200 per person per night. This is mandatory and goes toward Bhutan's conservation efforts.
Do I really need a guide if I'm Indian?
Yes. Under the new tourism rules, all tourists, including Indians, must be accompanied by a licensed Bhutanese guide when traveling outside their hotel.
Is Bhutan good for a bachelor party?
Absolutely not. Bhutan is deeply cultural, quiet, and highly regulated. There is no wild nightlife, public smoking is banned, and loud behavior is frowned upon. Go to Thailand or Goa instead.
Can I use UPI or Indian Rupees in Bhutan?
Indian currency (₹100, ₹200, ₹500 notes) is accepted everywhere at a 1:1 value. ₹2000 notes are not accepted. UPI (PhonePe/GPay) mostly does not work, though some merchants are starting to accept BHIM UPI. Always carry physical cash.
How hard is the Tiger's Nest trek?
It's a moderate to difficult trek, taking 4-6 hours round trip depending on your fitness. It's a steep, continuous incline at high altitude. You need basic cardiovascular fitness.
Can I drive my own car or bike into Bhutan?
Yes, but you need to get a vehicle permit at the border, pay a daily green tax for the vehicle, and you still must hire a Bhutanese guide to sit in your car/ride with your group.
Is Bhutan safe for solo female travelers?
It is one of the safest countries in the world for women. Crime rates are exceptionally low. Plus, since you'll have a mandatory guide, logistics are completely handled.

Group Trips to Bhutan

Planning a Bhutan group tour is the smartest way to explore the Land of the Thunder Dragon without breaking the bank. Since the introduction of the mandatory ₹1,200 daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and the rule requiring an official guide for Indian tourists, going solo has become expensive. By booking a Bhutan group trip, you naturally split the costs of private cabs, mandatory guides, and accommodations. Whether you are looking for a Bhutan road trip package starting from Phuentsholing or a direct flight itinerary landing in Paro, traveling with a squad makes the winding Himalayan roads much more fun. Most Bhutan group travel itineraries cover the essentials: climbing up to the iconic Tiger's Nest monastery, marveling at the architecture of Punakha Dzong, and soaking in the quiet cafe culture of Thimphu. If you are an Indian traveler between 20 and 35, expect a trip focused on culture, pristine nature, and spicy food like Ema Datshi, rather than wild partying. With group tours starting around ₹14,999, you can easily find budget-friendly Bhutan packages that take care of all the complex permits, hotel bookings, and transport, letting you focus entirely on the breathtaking views and the high-altitude chill.
